Barack Obama, clarifying Joe Biden's statement that he will face an international crisis if elected, says his running mate "sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes."
The next administration will face international challenges regardless of who is elected president, Barack Obama said Wednesday, rebutting criticism of Joe Biden's statement over the weekend that the Democratic candidate will face a "generated crisis" if elected.
Obama said the key reason the next president will face such threats is because of the damaging policies of the past eight years, and he said he's confident his administration will meet such a test.
"Whoever is the next president is going to have to deal with a whole host of challenges internationally and ... a period of transition in a new administration is always one in which we have to be vigilant," Obama said in Richmond, Va., where he met with a panel of foreign policy and military luminaries.
"We have to be careful. We have to be mindful that as we pass the baton in this democracy that others don't take advantage of it -- that is true, whether it's myself or Senator McCain, it's been true throughout history."
Obama said such challenges would not be unique to an Obama administration, and he tried to re-articulate Biden's statement, suggesting his running mate did not express his point as tactfully as the campaign would have liked.
"I think that Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes," Obama said.
Biden made the comments over the weekend to two fundraising audiences, saying he expects that Obama will face an international challenge early in his presidency if he is elected on Nov. 4.

And the fact that John McCain got it exactly right when Russia went into Georgia, and maive waif Obama got it exactly wrong, is that what you meant about the Naive Waif not knowing what he is doing, and the Presidency is not the place for on the job training?
You made me think about this “generated crisis”. That sounds like it’ll be generated by us. What the heck does this guy have in mind that everyone will think he’s wrong but his followers will have to stand by him? Is he going to attack Israel or some other ally?
There’s going to be a crisis at exactly 2:37 P.M. on Jan. 21ST “THAT WE DON’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT YET.”
What?
Because McCain has a 47 year old man’s dashing good looks and youthful demeanor.
It will probably be Baraq Hussein mohammed 0bama declaring a FATWA on the American people
Also why would he go on national television an say it? Rush just said why Biden did it... because he's got a big mouth. But Powell a Four Star General and Fmr. Secretary of State knows how to keep his mouth shut and keep a secret.I have no idea why he did it. Doesn't make sense.
Using JFK implies a militray crisis. And we will think Obama is wrong at the time. Could it mean he’ll do something the conservatives will agree with? Biden was talking to his base asking they stand behind them.
Where did the “2:37 PM” come from? That’s the first I have heard about that.
Oh wait...I meant both candidates...Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Oh, Biden was saying this same JFK stuff in 2004.
LLS
McCain is just 47 years old? Damn.
“Ignore the man behind the curtain”...
Man, all those millions you spend on cosultants, and that is the best spin you can come up with?
hahahahaha... Go back to the minors..oh wait, you aren’t talented enough for that... Go back to the college intramurals where you belong schlub.
From a townhall poster. - Biden’s point was
he is asking the electorate to remain faithful when Sen. Obama conducts radical foreign policy.
This group is going to bend on Iran, walk on our role in Gulf, try to make Israel square the circle and reduce America’s military use overseas by declaring to enemies that we are a ‘peace’ loving nation.
Biden’s “gaffe” was no mistake...it was a preventive pep-talk to their wild-eyed worshippers, preparing them, while warning us, of the pre-determined course of their potentially fatal foreign policy stance...appeasement, retreat, surrender.
How can anyone take these two seriously?
I was making a joke. Powell was so certain about the date then said he didn’t know what it was.
So we have the least experienced presidential candidate in history running with a VP candidate even HE doesn't trust.
I can't believe so many people are so stupid that they'd vote for this pair.
Even by some on FR.

As for his statement crazy wasn't it. Between his statement and Biden's statement and the thought that Obama might actually be president I'm going to start going back to church.
