Two veteran warriors battling to represent the 12th Congressional District appear locked in the closest race in the district in years.
Democratic Rep. John Murtha leads retired Army Lt. Col. William Russell by a little more than 4 percentage points, within the Susquehanna Poll's 4.9-point margin of error. The poll of 400 likely voters was conducted for the Tribune-Review on Tuesday, amid uproar over Murtha's statement that some of his constituents are racist.

It would be nice to see him lose. But, I have always heard that a small sample and a large margin of error makes for a worthless poll.

Go Russell 2008!
I hope McCain or Palin would stump with Russell soon. He needs some mass exposure fast. It’s looking promising.

Murtha’s hold on his House seat SHOULD slip - in fact, he should take the fall this November for his pathetic lies and false allegations against our men and women in uniform.

Just depends on whether his constituents are mad enough about him calling them racists to overcome their appetite for the massive pork he brings home from D.C.
That's how the fat rascal has stayed in office all these years.

He will hold this time, but his days are numbered. I give him one or two more elections and then he will be voted out. Last election people were saying he would lose and it was not even close.

That would be so sweet.Remember little tommy daschle losing his reelection? His lawyer got arrested for a disturbance at a polling precinct.

They should run him out of town! They should but they won't. Johnstown is a sad depressed town who sole existence is because of all the government dollar Murtha dumps in it. Half of the employment in that town is government contract dollars.

Two years ago there was a lot of false confidence that Diane Irey would unseat Murtha. This was based entirely on empty wishes. Irey got her butt (and a rather attractive one I might add) handed to her in the election.
You are totally correct. Murtha is A Pork King and unseating him even now is going to be tough, but I have to say it looks like our chances are good.

Not me. I said last time there was no way. Anyone who understands how dependent that district is on government dollars knows better. I've been to Johnstown, and their who business district is government contractor after government contractor.

Irey got 39% last time and was outspent, as I recall. Considering what a good Demo year that was I guess she made a respectable showing at least.
It would be wonderfully ironic though if PA were to go to McCain and cost 0bama the presidency thanks to Murtha’s insult of his constituents!

I hope so. But, as Tip O’Neil used to say “all politics are local” And, it’s my guess that Murtha is a master of the Earmark and has brought home lot’s of pork to his district over the years. Guess Emeril is right when he says “pork fat rules”, tastes good doncha know...
