To her core Republican supporters, there's a Sarah Palin universe where she basks in superstar status and is a strong contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.
"Palin draws large crowds and has energized Reagan Republicans, gun owners, women and people of faith," Grover Norquist, president of the anti-tax lobbying group Americans for Tax Reform, said recently.
"She is an asset and the most consequential VP candidate in a generation."
"If the Republican party is to survive the next decade or so as a major competitor for control of national politics in the United States, it will have to be a vastly different Republican party in four years," says Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University and author of "Pursuing the American Dream: Opportunity Over Four Centuries."
She is beloved by core Republican supporters due to her right-wing views on a wide range of issues such as same-sex marriage, abortion and immigration.
A Washington Post tracking poll released earlier this week indicated that Republicans and conservatives, for the most part, believe Palin's selection demonstrated the strength of McCain's ability to make sound decisions.
More than seven in 10 Republicans, and just under that number of self-identified "conservatives," said McCain's choice of Palin made them more confident in the kind of decisions he'd make as commander in chief.
"In most presidential primaries, the candidate most in line with the conservative or liberal base of their party winds up winning," wrote the Post's Chris Cillizza.
"Palin is clearly of the conservative base in a real and meaningful way; they view her as their first real spokesperson on the national stage in recent memory - perhaps since Ronald Reagan. It's hard to imagine those feelings going away because she has not worn well with either moderate & independent-minded voters."

mccain needs to win 2008 for her to have a real chance.
if obama win 2008, then do you think it be any different if it was obama vs palin 2012?
Some?
Well, maybe some of the “alleged” ‘Pubbies like Scott McClellan, Colin Powell and Christopher Buckley don’t want her to run... But I think the vast majority of Republicans like Palin more than they like McCain.
This is one of the reasons we need McCain to win. If McCain wins, we get Palin in 2012 or 2016; If he loses, she’s damaged goods.
Shoot, her running in 2012 is one of the only things making voting for McCain palatable.
It is premature to be talking of her in 2012.
There is a lot that can transpire in 4 years. Especially if we take our eyes off the War on Terror.
See what ending our domestic war on Communist Socialism got us?
Well, at least the I.Q. scale hasn't been slanted as much as the political scale to the left as.
ONWARD TO VICTORY JOHN MCCAIN AND SARAH PALIN....
“Some Republicans”? I would be hard pressed to find one who did not want her to run.
PUMA bump!
Damaged goods. Hahahahahaha. You are so funny. She is far from damaged having been on McCain’s ticket. She’s beautiful, well spoken, and makes a real connection with so many people. If she had been in the field with Romney and Giuliani and Thompson and McCain, she would have outshined them like a thermonuclear explosion. All those boring old guys. Who in the world do you think the Republicans will have four years from now that will make Sarah look like second best? I’m waiting....
I have been pleasantly surprised by McCain.....he is going to be a strong president and yes, he will do things that will make us made but we won’t sell out country down the river and he won’t kill our freedoms...
:o)
B-B-But I thought Palin was now viewed as a negative by Republicans?
She can’t. McCain will be in his second term.
BTT!
Too early. If Obama refuses to permit drilling and the price of oil soars, then she’s in.
She wins either way. McCain would be below 40% right now without her. I had nearly sworn off politics before the convention. She’ll either be VP for 4 years or a leading candidate in ‘12, possibly both, since I doubt McCain will run for a second term if he wins. The only other republican that piques my interest right now is Bobby Jindal. Palin/Jindal ‘12 works for me.
