26% Angry About Immigration, The Issue Candidates Ignore
Ramussen Reports ^ | 23 Oct 2008 | Ramussen Reports

Posted on 10/26/2008 11:13:36 AM PDT by BGHater

It’s the issue both presidential candidates have largely ignored as they court the nation’s growing Hispanic population, but one-out-of-four U.S. voters (26%) is still angry about the current immigration situation.

Twenty-eight percent (28%) express frustration about immigration, but for 43% it’s just one of many issues, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

With increased enforcement of the borders and America’s struggling economy serving as less of a magnet for illegal immigrants seeking better-paying jobs, it is perhaps not surprising that the number who are angry is down from 34% in August.

But as in August, 74% continue to believe the government is not doing enough to secure the nation’s borders. Just 12% think enough is being done.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls).

Only 35% say it is possible to end illegal immigration, compared to 52% who say it is not possible.

Sixty-two percent (62%) say gaining control of the border is more important than legalizing the status of undocumented workers, but 29% think the latter is more important. Support for border control is down seven points since the last survey while backing for legalization is up by eight.

Fifty-six percent (56%) think immigration policy should welcome all except those who are criminals and national security threats. Twenty-seven percent (27%) disagree.

Hispanic voters, who generally support Democrat Barack Obama more than Republican John McCain, are expected to be a critical factor in several Western states and perhaps even in unexpected places such as North Carolina.

Gee, how about securing the border. We wouldn’t have the headaches of making illegals who don’t deserve to be citizens legal.

If 26% are ‘angry’ it follows that 74% are NOT angry.

Most Americans don't realize that if you legalize the 12 to 20 million already here, they will be able to sponsor another 66 million to 100 million more LEGAL immigrants thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification. The corporate and political elites have a vested interest in keeping the public ignorant about the issue.

This nation was built by the toil of immigrates and they should be welcomed, the problem now is that the government refuses to control it. People living near the border have their property destroyed, and are subjected to violent behavior by those crossing illegally. There is also an increase in crime and disease as a result of illegal immigration. Government has the responsibility to protect it’s citizens from attack, it is not meeting that responsibility.

"This nation was built by the toil of immigrates and they should be welcomed"

You're right...I fully welcome those immigrants who built this nation, if any of them are still alive.

I welcome those who come here now, if they do it legally, if they have some skill to offer that we can't provide ourselves, and if they assimilate into our society, not try to force us to accept theirs.

The rest are our enemies...plain and simple.

Shameless plug time...I believe my song "No Way Jose (no se puede!)" sums it up. You can hear it by going to the link in my tagline. Thanks for listening! /shameless plug.

Immigration in the long run is the only issue that matters.

First, immigration isn’t a real issue for me. ILLEGAL immigration still is. A real problem for the future of America.

That being said, right now, we are in the middle of what I believe to be the most important presidential election in, well, at least my lifetime of 58 years. If not longer.

We have two viable candidates to choose from. Barack Obama would be a GUARANTEED disaster on immigration. John McCain...well, he’s displeased me greatly in the past and I am sure he will in the future. BUT, I’d rather be fighting the policies of McCain on immigration that those of Barry. Much rather.

So, I’ve purposely stayed away from the issue for a season. First, secure the government, (as much as possible), then wage the battle against the do-nothings in congress. Get the damn border secured and only then, address what is to be done with the problem of the millions of illegals already here.

The election first, though. IMHO, of course.

Makes one question the purpose of allowing illegal immigration, it’s as if someone wants them here. If that is the case, could it be that they are going to be a pawn in undermining our elections? Are the Republicans (their are some exceptions) complicit, or just too cowardly to responds.

Depends on how the survey was worded. Another 26% could have chosen "absolutely livid" over merely "angry."

No kidding...just ask Bob Dornan and JD Hayworth. I'm sure they're not the only ones, either!

So that begs another question...this year, if the strong stench of voter fraud is detected, will the GOP have the guts to challenge election results? Not just ACORN, but also illegal scumbag alien involvement? That would require the Pubbies grow a spine, which isn't likely.

How many more immigrants should we “welcome”?

Our population exceeds 300 million. Where would you like to draw the line? 400 million? 500 million?

Also, take note, that none of this groups we import vote, as a majority, for the conservative candidate. Where do you think we will end up if the current trend continues? Aren’t we importing socialism?

Is California better than it was 30 years ago? Honestly?

My position is evident in my posts. I think we still have plenty of room for productive, healthy and law abiding immigrants. Their origin, rate of introduction, and final number has to be determined our authorities. If they do it right we will see good results, if they don’t we will have more of what we have now.

Our leaders seem to be a bit out of step with the public.
The 12% is probably illegal aliens.

Ah yes, B1 Bob, a colorful guy. The answer is this will go on as long as it is allowed to. You have to fight with the army you have, think I heard that somewhere, and we have a rag tag bunch now. I honestly don’t know when/if there will be improvements. I would like to think we have enough people left that put duty and honor above everything else to turn things around but as my grandmother used to say .. God only knows and only time will tell.

“This nation was built by the toil of immigrates and they should be welcomed”

Yes, they are welcomed. But to say this nation was built by them is just silly. What do you suppose the rest of us were doing? Most of our native born ancestors settled and built the east, midwest, south and west right beside those immigrants and they far out numbered the newcomers. Remember only 4 or 5 of the 50 or so founders who signed the declaration were ‘immigrants’.

Well, excecpt for the “Native Americans” we are ALL immigrates. My ancesters (immigrants) started building in 1784, some preceded them, many came afterwards and benefited from the fruits of their labor. It continues today, carry on and don’t my parse words quit so stridently.

Bull. I’m a native American, born here. What are you?
And some of my ancestors were Indians (which is what they called themselves.)
