UTICA, New York – The race for President of the United States continued to tighten, as both Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain lost ground in a contest that is now a four–point game, the latest Reuters/C–SPAN/Zogby daily tracking telephone poll shows.

Obama lost 0.9 points and now stands at 49.0% in the tracking poll, while McCain lost 0.4 points and now stands at 44.7% support in a head–to–head match–up. Another 6.3% said they were undecided, up from 4.9% the day before.

McCain wins 87% of the Republican support, and Obama 84% of the Democratic support, and each candidate wins 11% of the opposing party’s support. Obama continues to lead among independent voters – his advantage now stands at 16 points, 51% to 35%.

McCain leads among men, 48% to 45%, while Obama leads among women by a larger 53% to 42% margin. Among white voters, McCain leads by a 53% to 41% margin. Among Hispanics, Obama leads, 66% to 28%, and among African Americans, Obama wins 88% to McCain’s 9%.

Since 10/9 the 9% undecided have shrunk to 6.3%.

McCains has gotten 1.3% of those undecideds, Obama 1.4%.

So, after 18 days, they seem to be neck in neck.

But look at this steady trend each of the past six days:

Obama: 52.2%->51.3%->51.1%->49.4%->49.9%->49% (Monday), a loss of 3.2%.

No wonder Obama wants everyone to vote early, he sees the trend.

McCain: 40.3%->41%->41.6%->44.1%->45.1%->44.7%, a gain of 4.4%.

Obama supporters are switching to McCain.

that is the big story, not what the undecideds are doing.

If Mccain keeps hammering hard for 6 more days, and this trend continues, McCain will be leading next Tuesday.

There is reason for hope, time for the big push, the McCain/Palin campaign can all get their sleep on the 5th.

John and Sarah, America is seeing Obama's hustle, pour it on.

...among African Americans, Obama wins 88% to McCain’s 9%.

That looks like the same amount of support that Kerry had among African Americans.

So, African Americans are not voting for Obama because he is black but rather because he is a Democrat.

Straight up, it is just nonsense. They darn sure aren't asking the Cuban Hispanics in Florida or the TX/AZ/NM Hispanics.

There are a lot of CA Hispanics that are Dems, but CA doesn't matter anymore it is so Democrat.

The Hispanics in the rest of America are well established, not so easily hustled and they vote in large numbers.

Obama's Hispanic supporters are good at registering and talking to pollsters, but not good at showing up to vote.

I still expect to see the media try to make it look like Obama is pulling away by Tuesday. If they don’t by Sunday, Obama is toast IMO.

If McCain pulls even according to the media, it’s because Obama is going to lose huge, and they don’t want to be caught cheating as much as they are.

Wow DOW, +686 at 12:41pm PDT.

If the Messiah is only pulling the support of 84% of Democrats, he is toast come Tuesday. Kerry had 89% of Dems in 2004 and still lost.

If you take 100% of the vote in CA, the Electoral Vote is still the same as if you won it by 50.1%..........

IBD doesn’t have any numbers yet for today. Usually they are out by 3:30 ET, I thought. If there is a further tightening there I will be very encouraged.

No way the male split is that close. Still only pulling the historical 90% of AA. These demographic breakdowns don't look good for “The One”.

The really good news is that the Chosen One is dipping under 50% to 49%.......couple that with the Bradley factor and Senator Obama will be just that on the 5th.

This is a puzzle to me..........

According to the census figures from 2006, the average income of Non-Hispanic households is $52,423. Of Hispanics $37,781.

Hispanics are probably not voting that much different than non-Hispanics with similar household income, education, marital status, etc.

This is why it is folly to try to provide amnesty in hopes of luring Hispanics to the GOP. There is no reason to think that Hispanics will be more Republican than Non-Hispanics with other variables constant, and no one expects Hispanic variables to change over time towards more greater GOP voting likelihood.

Shouldn't be puzzled RB: 'The One' promises more goodies [drivers licenses; 90 day freeze on foreclosures] to be delivered quicker than the McCain Amnesty Horror Show.

i believe it... look at the crowds at his Colorado and New Mexico rallies... Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in there... i know several educated Mexican-Americans who wanted Hillary in the primaries, but are settling for Obama... this is in California...
