US deaths in Iraq fell in October to their lowest monthly level of the war, matching the record low of 13 US fatalities suffered in July. Iraqi deaths fell to their lowest monthly levels of the year.
Eight of the 13 Americans died in combat, most of them in northern Iraq where al-Qaida and other Sunni insurgent groups remain active. The US suffered 25 deaths in September and 23 in August.
The sharp drop in US fatalities reflects the overall security improvements across the country following the Sunni revolt against al-Qaida and the rout suffered by Shiite extremists in fighting last spring in Basra and Baghdad.
But the decline also points to a shift in tactics by extremist groups, which US commanders say are focusing their attacks on Iraqi soldiers and police that are doing much of the fighting.
Dude, it’s the economy at this stage. And it will be the economy through Tuesday. Cross your fingers.
“This is HORRIBLE news for the Democrats. They DESPERATELY WANT America to lose, and leave millions of brown-skinned people dead, just like they did 30 years ago with the Killing Fields in Southeast ASia. Too bad for them, this time we’re winning this one.”
Yea, it’d be “horrible” news for the Dems if the press would report it.
By the way, personally I’m so happy to hear this news. Son served over there and it is our personal mission to make sure that those that have fought and died did not do so in vain.
We were winning in Vietnam too until the RATs refunded the war effort. How else can you explain winning every major battle but losing the war? Its never happened in the history of warfare (ever). Leave it to democrats to invent it.
God Bless our fighting men and women and thank GOD for their SELFLESS devotion to duty, honor and country.
Oh and well done to General Patreaus and the Commander-in-Chief!
The Surge Failed, axe Ohbummer.
Pray for W McCuda and Our Troops
Actually it’s good news for Democrats. Obama can pull the troops out and claim his strategy helped bring stability.
We will never forget those who sacrificed for our safety and our freedom. No matter how much the Obambi and his anti-American syncopants whine about what a horrible country this is, those of us who live in the real world fall to our knees every morning and thank God we live in the greatest country in history, protected by the finest military in history. Many thanks to your son and to his courageous family.
Thank goodness tomorrow is November. I am sick of OCTOBER SURPRISES!
Although, I could hear this kind of news all year.
Combat deaths = 8 in July, 12 in August, 8 in Sept and 7 in October.
With 144,000 troops, this is only slightly above Washington, DC’s murder rate.
Over the last year the Marine corps have endured greater KIA from motorcycle accidents (25) than in Iraq (20).I’m trying to find where I read this yesterday, it desrves a link. When the USMC switches over to motorcycle safety, all I can say is “Well done”.
Your comment means a lot to me, hsalaw. We had a rough row to hoe for awhile, and now our concern is for each and every one of our military men and women.
70% of our troops want McCain to win. That alone is enough reason for any American who supports our troop to vote for McCain. They are the ones in the “trenches”, they know what they are facing, and they know the dangers they face if Barack Obama becomes their Commander in Chief.
Prayers are in order.
They won’t report it. The media are almost ignoring Iraq, now that the news is good.
Economics does have a stake in this. EFP’s are expensive to build and IED’s and VBIED’s are not cheap. Maybe with a redistribution of wealth more people could afford to build these things.
Like everyone knows, there are no longer major combat operations in Iraq. Right now we are just policing the bad guys.
For the number of troops there, that’s probably a lower mortality rate than any major city in the country.
It was on cnn.com front page yesterday.
