Five months and thousands of weddings after California's highest court sanctioned same-sex marriage, anxious eyes around the nation will closely follow voters Tuesday as they decide whether to turn back the clock.
Given the state's size and influence, the vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage has become a referendum on sexual orientation and civil rights. Both sides call it the "Gettysburg" of the power struggle between the gay rights movement and the Christian right, with the victors capturing momentum in other states.
"As California goes, so goes the nation," Mayor Gavin Newsom boldly predicted at a City Hall celebration the day the state Supreme Court legalized marriages of gays and lesbians.

I didn’t know Gettysburg and the deaths of 53,000 good men on both sides had been reduced to a conflict over genitals.
Gettysburg is Holy Ground and I, for one, am angry it is being compared to someone’s lust.
Four whores and seven queers ago, ah nevermind
Prop 8 will win and not because of the so called “Christian Right”, but because most people simply don’t want it, just like they don’t want polygamy, or incestuous marriage. Get over it gays, and quit while you are ahead. You push to far and you will end up losing much more.
Gettysburg? I call it the Waterloo of the Gay Marriage movement.
May God have mercy on this country if this is true!
Sorry "big boy." We did the lawyer version last year and it got shot down. This year we kept it simple and it's going to pass big time. Arizona is going to have a constitutional amendment. Screw the "judges."
Do not soil the memory of 53000 good men by comparing them to men with no balls.
I hope you are right, polls are too close to call right now. Last poll had it slightly behind.
What the gays don’t SIMPLY understand is that all the gays have to do is simply call it “gay/civil unions”. That’s it. And the right will lay off. But NO, they have to hold the majority victim to their minority culture. I wish I can tell the gays to KMA but they might do more than that...
The polls are crap, just like with the prez election. The large hispanic community in CA and the black community will overwhelmingly vote for 8, despite most of them voting for bambi. In regards to homosexuality those two cultures are very conservative.
Gettysburg was a loss.
Cali hasn't been a bellwether since the 1960s.

I voted Yes on 8 last week (absentee). Not to “roll back the clock”, but to roll back judicial insanity and activist extremism.
