The final numbers are in -- and turnout in the 2004 presidential election, it seems, was a bit more impressive than previously believed.
The Committee for the Study of the American Electorate reported yesterday that more than 122 million people voted in the November election, a number that translates into the highest turnout -- 60.7 percent -- since 1968. Turnout was 6.4 percent higher than in 2000, the largest uptick in voter participation since the 1952 election. The numbers are a bit higher than the research group's initial estimates, which were based on unofficial tallies and released days after the election. The report noted that although turnout reached new heights, more than 78 million Americans who were eligible to vote stayed home on Election Day. The group estimated that Bush won just 30.8 percent of the total eligible voters.

In seriousness, less showed up on voting day, a lot of people early voted.

From Sabato’s crystal ball. Greater turnout helped Bush despite the country’s most quoted political scientist saying otherwise. Looks liek Sabato is going to get it wrong this year too, and has drunk the kool aid about barack’s surge of “young” voters.
Yep, Larry (the lizard) Sabato was disgraceful in 2004 and yet he is still perceived as the ‘expert’ from VA....I actually sent him a note asking him how he managed to be so wrong in ‘04 since he was such an ‘expert’...he actually replyed with some whiney excuse.
O’Reilly always kisses his butt schmoozing with “Professor,” “Doctor,” and - less expansively - “Doc.” Not Big Bill’s finest moment.
They believe that this election will be the highest in a century. I guess we will just wait and see.
I can believe 60%, for a number of reasons.
Dead people on the voter rolls, and those moved away. Much harder to remove than you hink. And that’s without bad intentions.
Also: registering people in the summer is easy. Getting them out to vote in November is hard.
Think about a new condo, with a lot of younger people moving in. Many from out of town. Community meeting in the summer: hand out registration cards. But although young people generally do not vote nearly as hard as older people, they are still on the registration rolls.
Turnout in 2008 appears much less this year. Between Obama and McCain they got 119 million at most, 63 million plus and 55 million plus. I wonder what the third party vote tally was in 2008?
id like to see the break down of who turned out! I think maybe McCain only got 80% of the conservative Republican vote which cost him the election! Where did ya get the numbers?

That's what I read. ZerO got 20% of the conservative vote.

I checked the NY Times map. Other sources have similar numbers. Check my posting history. The NY Times has its bias, but I don't believe they are that stupid to post phony numbers.
