Pro-Life Advocates Urged to Renew Efforts Against Abortion After Election Loss
Life News ^ | 11/5/08 | Steven Ertelt

Posted on 11/05/2008 3:56:52 PM PST by wagglebee

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Several pro-life leaders are hoping the majority of Americans who take a pro-life position on abortion will re-charge and re-energize following Tuesday night's election defeats. They say the pro-life movement must prepare themselves to take on a pro-abortion president and renew educational efforts.

"We have long known that the work of advancing a culture of life is not a short-term project," Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest told LifeNews.com.

"Recall that William Wilberforce fought against the slave trade for 45 years before he ultimately prevailed in his defense of life," she said.

"In 2008, it is clear that, despite the challenges still remaining, the pro-life message is steadily gaining ground," Yoest contends. "Momentum in the states has enabled us to make significant gains in protecting women and unborn children. Young people today self-report as pro life at a higher rate than their parents' generation."

After the elections, Father Frank Pavone spoke of a "great mistake" but an "abiding hope."

"Americans have made a grave mistake in electing Barack Obama to the presidency," he said. "Yet America herself remains great and is not a mistake, which is why so many of her citizens will continue, with even greater energy and determination, to defend her founding principles."

Pavone urged the pro-life community to rally together to oppose the coming Obama administration's efforts to roll back pro-life laws.

"The pro-life movement has made significant gains in the courts and in the law in these last eight years. For the next four, the movement will work to prevent the erosion of that progress," he said.

Bradley Mattes, the director of Life Issues Institute, encouraged pro-life groups and advocates to focus on education with the reality that legislative goals of ending abortion are now stalled.

“With federal legislation no longer an option for a minimum of two years, pro-life education is absolutely central and critical to our future efforts of ending abortion," he told LifeNews.com.

"The key to countering this devastating political loss is to change the hearts and minds of Americans on abortion and related life issues. That can only be done through effective pro-life education," he added.

Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue said he thinks the pro-life movement will ultimately prevail.

"Yesterday's losses are just a speed bump on the road to victory for the innocent," he told LifeNews.com. "Overall, Americans are more pro-life than ever before. Election cycles tend to be cyclical, and we are confident that we will once again have our day."

"These setbacks will only energize us. The fight is on," Newman explained. "We will continue to work though every available legal means to stop abortion. The person occupying the White House will not diminish that work."

"Now is not the time for discouragement, but a time to roll up our sleeves and continue the fight, having peace knowing that the results in God's hands and, ultimately, victory is assured," he concluded.

Haleigh Poutre Update

More on the horrors that Haleigh endured.

Child-abuse expert: Photos of Haleigh Poutre show repeated abuse

By Patricia Wen, Globe Staff

SPRINGFIELD - Displaying hospital photos of Haleigh Poutre's battered body shortly after she fell into a coma in 2005, a child-abuse expert today depicted the girl as the victim of systematic abuse that included cigarette burns and physical restraints, not a troubled child engaging in self-injurious behavior as defense attorneys have suggested.

One photo, shown by Dr. Christine Barron during the child abuse trial of Haleigh's stepfather, revealed the girl's bare back, with nearly a dozen bruises and cuts on all sides and near the spine. Barron said the shape of many of the wounds suggested that the 11-year-old Westfield girl was struck multiple times by a "hard solid object."

"Is that an area a child could reach herself?" asked prosecutor Laurel Brandt, pointing to an image of a circular wound on the child's back...

Obama Selecting Most Anti-Life&Family Rads He Can Find-plans to dismantle protection for marriage

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In light of further actual and rumored appointments, Obama’s future presidential administration is steadily emerging as a regime ominously packed with Obama insiders who promise to help roll out the carpet for the President-elect's radical anti-life and anti-family agenda.

Media outlets recently named Arizona governor Janet Napolitano as Obama’s probable choice for secretary of Homeland Security.

An early Obama supporter and campaigner, Napolitano firmly established herself as an extreme abortion supporter by vetoing the partial birth abortion ban, and in one month she vetoed four anti-abortion bills. In 2005 NARAL warmly praised the governor for vetoing a bill that would have allowed Arizona pharmacies not to distribute the abortifacient morning-after pill due to a moral or religious objection.

Tom Dashcle has recently been named as the likely candidate for the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), an appointment Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said gives pro-lifers a “frightening glimpse” into the new Cabinet.

The former Democratic Senate majority leader gained notoriety for his liberal views on abortion when he opposed the partial-birth abortion ban, endorsed taxpayer-funded military abortions, and supported taxpayer funding to provide morning-after pills to young public school girls. Perkins also lamented that Daschle, a man with no experience in public health, is on track to become the ultimate authority on federal health issues.

One of the national co-chairs for Obama’s presidential campaign, Daschle warmed early on to Obama and in 2007 gushed that the Illinois senator “personifies the future of Democratic leadership in our country.”

Douglas Kmiec: Barack Obama More Catholic Than Previous Pro-Life Presidents

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Pepperdine law professor who calls himself a pro-life Catholic but was one of the leading apologists for perhaps the most pro-abortion presidential candidate in history is at it again. Douglas Kmiec is now saying Barack Obama is more Catholic than previous presidents who were pro-life.

Kmiec's comments come in response to some from Cardinal J. Francis Stafford, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See, who called Obama on the carpet on abortion in a speech at the Catholic University of America last Thursday...

Italian Government Must Act Fast to Save Eluana: Prominent Italian Lawyer

ROME, November 21, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Some hope still exists to save Eluana Englaro’s life, but the government must move quickly to overcome political differences and act, a prominent Italian lawyer today told LifeSiteNews.com today.

The greatest hope to save the life of Eluana Englaro is to have the Italian government pass an emergency measure defining food and water as a human right, and not medical treatment, he said. While a group of pro-life advocates have brought a request for a hearing on the subject to the European Court of Human Rights, such an attempt, he said, will almost certainly result in a backlash against the legal concept of the right to life.

Petition to the United Nations (to stop universal right to abortion)

December 10 is the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Rumor is that pro-abortion radicals will use this celebration to demand a universal right to abortion.

For years pro-abortion radicals have tried to strip the right to life from unborn children. They pressure countries to reinterpret U.N. documents and write new ones that deny children, families and parents of their human rights. They even claim that the "right to life" in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and treaties means a right to abortion!

We expect pro-abortion activists to present petitions making this ridiculous claim to the General Assembly at the Dec. 10th event at the U.N. We need to outdo them.

Grandmother's Account of Traumatizing Experience with Abortion Moves Jamaican Parliament to Tears

KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 21, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A recent presentation by a woman who 20 years ago bullied her daughter into having an abortion reduced members of the Jamaican parliament to tears, reports the Jamaica Gleaner.

Anne Arthur, a grief counselor, told the parliament she has never fully recovered from having bullied her daughter into killing her unborn child. "I drove my daughter to the abortion clinic like a lamb to the slaughterhouse, against her will," Arthur told her audience.

"I pressed my views on her and convinced her that she would be unable to care for the child while studying and an abortion would be the best thing to do, offering her no other solution or help … While my 12-week-old grand-daughter was ripped apart from my daughter's womb, I knew with brutal clarity that I had made the greatest mistake of my life," said Arthur.

Arthur told the parliamentary gathering that she does not support abortion under any circumstances now, even under the usual exceptions of rape and incest. She said that her 41-year old daughter, now married, has had trouble conceiving because of the damage the abortion, which was performed legally in Germany, caused.

Congratulations, Alamo-Girl, on the Release of Your New Book!

Great Command Cover Image

There Is Only One Great Commandment
Lulu Press, 2008

It is my honor and distinct pleasure to announce the publication of Alamo-Girl’s new book, There Is Only One Great Commandment, a prayerful work of Christian witness and devotion that speaks to how one centers one’s life in God. A non-denominational, non-sectarian work, it focuses on Christian living — on the growth of the Image of Christ in our souls, in our everyday lives.

In There Is Only One Great Commandment, Alamo-Girl offers to conduct you on a spiritual walk through the Scriptures, using the Lord’s Prayer as the guiding map, mining the truths embedded within that prayer. As marron writes on the cover, "Each word and phrase has been pulled out, held to the light, admired, contemplated, and then returned carefully to its place. And the way it was written is exactly the right way to read this book: This is not a book to read in a day but tasted and chewed morsel by morsel. Take your time. Let it sink in line by line. You won’t be disappointed."

All to the glory of God — in Christian faith and confident affirmation that there is only one great commandment: To love God with your whole heart, and soul, and mind — to love Him surpassingly above all else.

Catholic Leader: Excommunication Possible for Backing Pro-Abortion Bill

Look out MTV, Here Come Pro-Life Ads which Have Been Shown to Decrease Abortion Numbers

ROSWELL, GA, November 24, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-life television commercials with a proven track record of substantially lowering abortion rates are set to air on MTV beginning the day after Christmas.

Pro-Abortion Med Student Shrinks away from Practice after "Disturbingly Brutal" Procedure

BALTIMORE, November 24, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Though she had practiced the procedure as a student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine by scraping out a piece of fruit with razor-sharp abortion instruments, Lesley Wojcik learned that her training could never have prepared her for a real abortion.

What caught her off-guard, says the second-year med student, was the brutality of a procedure that subjects women to extreme pain.

In a Washington Post article detailing her journey to become an abortionist, Wojcik describes how during her first witnessed abortion, she recoiled in horror as the mother began letting out blood-curdling screams. The woman, who was "in obvious pain," had been only partially sedated, and the ordeal was so disturbing that Wojcik says she nearly vomited...
