Swing Voters Don't Want Big Government
WSJ ^ | November 06, 2008 | PAT TOOMEY

Barack Obama and congressional Democrats won big on Tuesday night, but they should not mistake their victory for a big-government mandate. The evidence tells a very different story.

A poll commissioned by the Club for Growth in 12 swing congressional districts over the past weekend shows that the voters who made the difference in this election still prefer less government -- lower taxes, less spending and less regulation -- to Sen. Obama's economic liberalism. Turns out, Americans didn't vote for Mr. Obama and Democratic congressional candidates because they support their redistributionist agenda, but because they are fed up with the Republican politicians in office. This was a classic "throw the bums out" election, rather than an embrace of the policy views of those who will replace them.

Although currently held by Republican congressmen, all but one of these 12 districts we surveyed flipped to Democratic control Tuesday night. Collectively, President Bush carried these districts in 2004 with 53%. They are nearly evenly split in party affiliation: 40% Democratic, 37% Republican and 19% Independent. The poll surveyed 800 voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.46 percentage points.

“I knew we were in trouble the minute the poll came out before the election that said that something like 35% of the American people still thought the Republicans were controlling Congress....(eye roll)”

Well, they’ll soon have no doubt who’s in charge now. I never knew until recent years how densely stupid American voters can be.

The mushy middle have/had no idea who they voted for, the lame scream media made sure of it. This is the most uneducated the electorate has been about a candidate since radio and TV.

I expect there will be some buyers remorse from a few honest reporters left out there, and there will certainly be buyers remorse from the uninformed public.

I detected a hint of buyers remorse on election night from the lame scream media...they didn't seem overjoyed....it was more like “Oh my gosh, what have we done?”

I think it was starting to hit them the last few weeks.

Seriously! I mean does anyone really believe that this election was about anything other than "I want someone elses pie -- as much as I can get." He who promised the most pie won!!!

Aside from the Mike Church comments that McCain was the same as Obama in many cases and THAT was the problem, here is what I think the problem was:

1. Elderly fear of Social Security/Medicare reductions. Obama promised freebies, but McCain never could make the message that they are not sustainable.

2. The MTV youth came out in droves to vote for Obama. The majority of youth votes are ignorant of economics, the perils of big government and socialism. They have no idea of history, thanks to our lousy school system (which teaches sports and how-to-get along instead of traditional academics). McCain COULD have explained how there will be fewer jobs under Obama because of his tax and trade poliices, but he didn’t. McCain was supporting the same lie that Obama gave — we can return jobs to the USA. THAT IS A LIE. LABOR COSTS TOO MUCH AND THERE ARE TOO MANY ENVIRONMENTAL RESTRICTIONS AND COSTS. So, taxpayers have to make huge subsidies to UNION corporations to produce inefficient goods.

What a totally bungled message by McCain. Obama promised jobs, free healthcare, bailouts, etc. Hard to compete with UNLESS you got back to the Reagan Revolution.

They will also believe the MSN (Chrissy) when they blame all of this on mess on Bush/Republicans.

It will be up to us to make sure the truth comes out.

Look, everybody; instead of bitching about how stupid swing voters are, let’s get organized on the issues for 2010. This looks like a set up for a repeat of 1994.

Put them in with the PA voters who, as Ann Coulter put it, aren’t racists, just retards.

Indeed, the MSM are scumbags..but let us not forget, that a lot of the Republicans we sent to Washington forgot how to be conservative..especially our president!

So, according to Toomey’s article, sounds like these swing voters disagreed with Obama on most issues, but voted for him anyway. Wow — that cult thing is a powerful magnet.

You will appreciate this article then:

We need to get some conservative fighters in charge in Washington and I am encouraging my fellow freepers to write their congresscritters to ask them to make Mike Pence the minority house leader.

Absolutely spot-on. After being maligned and disrespected, they return true to form, strap on the kneepads, pucker the lips and kneel for another session. Amazing.

This was what happened with Carter. As soon has people see higher taxes and bad economy from the Democrats economic policy they will throw them out same as most of Europe and Canada just did. The good news is the dummy swing voters are not conservatives or liberals, just ignorant people floating along in life. They have no idea about economics or politics, but they sure as heck did not realize what they just voted for. They never convert, they simply swing. Its our job to swing them back.

I do not think the win was that big.

It was big enough.

Look. The Republican/GWB two election disaster (06+08) could not be halted by claiming that democrats will give us big government because we sat by and held our noses when GWB and friends created the biggest fed government in the history of the USA. Wake up folks, it was a disaster.

What is new is Democrats will give us a controlling intruding government. Obama model is Maryland, in 2007 when democrats took over entire MD state government due to GWB hatred , they taxed us with largest increase in state history, taxed energy (after promising us low cost energy, sound familiar??) then told us we can get a few bucks back (less than $100 per year) if the state/BGE can contol our thermostat remotely. Not kidding! It’s on BGEs website. Thanks GWB, thanks again, again!

Great point. BHO's margin of victory came from people who didn't see much difference between him and McCain on economic issues and either voted for him or stayed home. BHO ran as an economic centrist/populist and the Pravda media supported this lie.

Now's the time to use this to our advantage by creating an alliance between Blue Dog Dems and GOP Conservatives.

BHO's ethnic monolith and white neo-Marxist supporters see him as their jackpot.

When it comes time to make policy choices, a Blue Dog-Conservative alliance can either make BHO move to the center or make the Dems pay during the 2010 midterms if BHO and Congress choose to placate the ethnic monolith and neo-Marxists.
