The problem here, though, is that unlike the False Messiah, Long actually had executive experience and accomplished something as Governor. And as wacky as Huey was, I’d still have said he loved America, all of those things one could not say of you-know-who. There’s one last Long left in LA politics today, just elected to the legislature from Winn Parish, the family’s home. He’s a Republican.

Before reading this I mistakenly thought someone was comparing Zero with a character from Amos & Andy!

Good post. I need to get this to Rod Dreher. He’s a Louisiana native who seemed strangely fascinated with That One.

I’ve thought of this similarity, too. Huey Long, fortunately, never got to make it much outside of his native stomping grounds. Perhaps ultimately he would not gotten the funding and the press adulation that Obama has had on a national level, and thus would not have succeeded; or perhaps, as the author suggests, Americans as a whole would have been too smart and too suspicious to run off en masse after a demagogue like Long.

The thing that most depresses me about this election is not simply that Obama is extremely left-wing but that he is a demagogue, plain and simple, and ran as a demagogue, stirring up enmity and making wild promises, and this time around there were enough Americans susceptible to this pitch to elect him. Furthermore, Obama is not just a free-lance demagogue like Huey Long; there are people behind him who have a very definite program and found him, a narcissistic, sociopathic personality with no defined values of its own except self-promotin, to be the perfect vehicle. They are much more rational than Obama; he may be vicious and may be the person who whips up the mob to accomplish their goals, but they’re the ones with the plan, which they are already putting into place so that it will be a fait accompli by the time people even think of questioning or resisting it.
