Obama wants forced labor for school children
Office of the President-Elect ^ | 11-05-08 | Office of the President-Elect

America Serves

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

I think community service is good for our youth. If you don’t require them to do it, they won’t. Besides, it will build their self esteem.

I think you son should be required to head on down to the Interstate to pick up garbage along the side of the road.

It will be good for your self-esteem.

As far as my kids go, I will determine what is best for their esteem.

Okay?

Thanks!

Veterans Corp?

No, never. Any veteran that serves this socialist bunch is automatically dishonored forever. They are not getting any of my kids.

Government has no business forcing children to work.

““In many areas, the even numbers run down one side of the street, and the odd numbers are across the street. My house number is 1220, and the house immediately to the left is 1222. 1221 is across the street.”

Clearly an evil neighborhood.”

The war on private schools and homeschooling will accelerate. They are a threat to the path of the Obama Nation

Exactly.

I am a life long Reagan Conservative, and even I can see the merit to this...

I would say you are NO Reagan conservative...and I will prove it...

1) This is unconstitutional. The 13th amendment specifically states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Since you think it is a good idea to REQUIRE (read: involuntary) service (read: servitude) to the community, then you think its a good idea to just forget this part of the constitution. Reagan would not have done that.

2) This will increase, yet again, the Federal government. It is another Government program. If you are going to REQUIRE voluntary service, you are going to have to create government oversight of that service...i.e. government jobs. Federal employees will have to be added to the already HUGE payroles in order to monitor this Federal program. That costs money...my money. Reagan would not be for THAT.

3) You are taking RIGHTS away from parents. I believe in community service. My kids regularily serve through our church via missions, etc. However, if you think Obama and Pelosi are going to allow that to qualify as their 50 hours of service, your a naive. You are in favor of the Federal Government mandating how my children spend their time in service to their community AND IT MAY BE IN WAYS I FIND OFFENSIVE. I have a God given right to raise my children in a manner I see fit without the government ordering me to expose them to values I deem harmful. That is why they are home-schooled. You are in favor of the Federal Government dictating how I raise my children. Reagan would have been against that.

4) Someone will have to drive them to their community service and wait for them while they perform it. That costs money....MY MONEY. It will cost a lot of my money...especially if I have to drive them some distance and gas prices shoot back up because of the DEM controlled congresses poor energy policies. You are advocating that I be FORCED to spend my money to drive my child around to do forced service/labor. Reagan would have been against that.

You might have liked Reagan enough to vote for him...but newbie...you are NO Reagan conservative. Nice try.

Well said FreeReign.
I’ll never understand why do people want government to control their lives

“I think you son should be required to head on down to the Interstate to pick up garbage along the side of the road.”

Oops....sorry. I had no idea they were going to be forced to be on a dangerous interstate picking up garbage. I guess I missed that.

They have this crap at our local high school. Had one of my boys almost not graduate cause he hadn’t done his “service”.

This is fine for kids who have the time, but what about kids who have to work to help save for college or to help out their families??

Will kids in those situations be excused??

Clearly you were NEVER a boyscout.

Actually - I was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout...my mom was a den mother and my cousin was a scout master. And I was both because I CHOSE to participate. Not because somebody at the FEDERAL LEVEL FORCED ME INTO IT. I was FREE to make that choice for MYSELF.

Compulsory ANYTHING at the FEDERAL level is NOT conservatism.

If you truly think so, your credentials are pretty much shot here. Go try over on DU or Kos-land...they love statists over there...

LOL! No, what you did was miss the point and address what wasn't the point.

Go back and figure it out.

Okay?

Thanks!

Exactly. What about kids from low income families with after school jobs to help make the family's ends meet? Will they be conscripted into unpaid federal service? How does that help working families?

It is sad read that you think 1 hour of community service week, as part of high school graduation credit is socialism. Clearly you were NEVER a boyscout.

I was a boyscout, but I don't recall the government requiring me to be one.

Based on what you said, clearly you were NEVER a boyscout.

Sorry, Barry. After 28 years in the US Navy, I’m retired.

Same here, albeit a different branch; however, I received what appeared to be a somewhat official looking email this morning. I am requested to report to the nearest cotton field at sunup on Monday morning.

Would you care to explain how it's different when McCain does it in 2001, or are you content to see the GOP swerve further left while you hurl churlish insults?

If you aren't a Democrat, the Democratic Party has no use for you. If you're a conservative, stand up and criticize our side for their craven liberalism. John McCain proposed the exact same thing four years before Barack Obama ran for Congress. And we still nominated him. That says a lot more about us than it does the Democrats.

Feel free to support the Party of Democrat Lite that the Republican Party has become, and never criticize the members of the GOP for trying to out-liberal the liberals.

Just don't be surprised when people pick the real deal and vote for actual Democrats.

And that should be the PARENTS CHOICE to require it. Not some federal bureaucrat. How does federally mandated compulsory volunteerism fit into a free society?
