The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

The headline is ridiculous.

My wife works in a public middle school and I can tell you that the feral, ill-disciplined trash that populate it, definitely need something. "Forced labor"? Please! Most of these juvenile monsters need to be thrashed to within an inch of their lives. They have no fear of man nor God. Community service is too good for them. I'd line them all up and send them on a route march through the Arizona desert.

Like any government scheme, it will be badly run, full of loopholes and require a whole new bureaucracy to administer it. Furthermore, changing the heart of man is God's work, not the government's but I understand what Obama has in mind here, misguided as he is.

Are you going to actually be the one that drives my children to and from this wonderful idea of community service. I’m already driving a ton to take my kids to/from school.

This is also forcing parents into doing something more, and I already have a full plate taking care of my 3 kids (one who is special needs) and my ailing parents.

All the House critters need to be read the riot act, that we're making lists of who votes for this kind of crap, and whichever ones are on such lists will get the whole megillah read back to them in terms of campaign retribution, such that they can simply count on being removed.

This message needs to reach them via hundreds of thousands of emails, phone calls, etc.

We won't get all the cretin critters' attention, but we'll get a similar count as the ones influenced by last year's amnest attempt, which just might be enough to hold our fingernails onto.

There is the little matter of the 13th Amendment, which bars compulsory servitude (otherwise known as “slavery”).

Here's how it will work in the colleges. Obama couples this with a $4,000 financial aid grant, which is conditional upon the "community service" being done. It works out to the work being paid at the rate of $40/hr. So far, so good.

BUT what will inevitably happen is the colleges will raise tuition again (tuition has risen much faster than inflation, and keeps place with any increase in financial aid), so within a year students will be the same amount they had been paying out of pocket, PLUS will need to do the 100 hours. This will translate into failure to do community service resulting in a $4K fine.
