Pelosi rues passage of Prop. 8
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/7/8 | Zachary Coile

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed deep disappointment on Friday that California voters approved Prop. 8, the measure banning same-sex marriage, and defended her ally, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, against critics who say his actions contributed to its passage.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Chronicle, Pelosi said she believes some voters might not have fully understood the initiative, which overturned a state Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. The measure was approved 52 to 48 percent.

"Unfortunately, I think people thought they were making a statement about what their view of same-sex marriage was," the San Francisco Democrat said. "I don't know if it was clear that this meant that we are amending the Constitution to diminish freedom in our state."

Newsom played a starring role in TV and radio ads aired by the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign, which seized on his remarks at a rally in May after the court's ruling that same-sex marriages were "going to happen, whether you like it or not." The measure's passage was seen as a blow to the possibility of a Newsom bid for governor.

Pelosi, a longtime supporter of Newsom, said the mayor should not be blamed for the measure's success. "He acted upon his beliefs. He feels very strongly . . .

But those of us who feel strongly and act on our beliefs in support of marriage must be doing so because we aren't as enlightened as Gavin "Any Twosome" Newsom.

"Unfortunately, I think people thought they were making a statement about what their view of same-sex marriage was,"

DUH! Ya think?

Anyone else notice that the Dems always, always attack the intelligence of their enemies? W is stupid, voters are "misinformed" or "are misguided and listen to the wrong talk radio."

This from the party of such geniuses as Joe Biden and Robert Byrd.

A zillion news stories, signs everywhere, TV commercials, 72 million dollars spent, & people didn't know this was to amend the constitution. Yeah, right!

I rue the day that Ms. Pelosi became speaker of the house.

Blacks and latinos helped pass Prop 8.

And once again the left treats its constituents as though they were stupid.

Good show, Nancy.

We didn't amend the constitution to diminish freedom, but to restore it. When judges make law based on their feelings they take away the right of the people to decide public policy. They remove fundamental issues from the democratic process, and place it beyond the power of the people and their chosen representatives. The only way that can ever be justified is when it it a clear violation of the constitution which was itself democratically voted on. When they simply make it up, they are usurping the most basic of political rights from all the people, our right to live in a democratic society.

Unfortunately Pelosi’s district is about 90% Democrat. It will be a cold day in hell when a Pub gets elected there.

Squirm “Edwierdo” and you too “Belagosie”.

LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT, Voters were ‘smart’ enough to vote correctly for “your” candidate, and ‘dumb’ enough to misinterprate prop 8?

You know what I think? I think you two are upset that the effort you put forth - Illegal aliens were a big part of your efforts - showed you that even these illegal aliens DID NOT want this measure to go your way.

My friend from CA told me last week that she had many friends saying that they were voting for Prop 8 because they wanted gay marriage.

They just connected the bill with gay marriage and said yes.

I’ve recently realized that I’ve had a habit of overestimating my fellow human beings for most of my life. People still surprise me.

Pelosi should be disturbed by the passage of Prop 8, it is an indication that even in liberal California, there is a majority of people who will vote for a conservative idea. She is either misleading, stupid, or both when she laments the change to the California constitution. Prop 8 merely clarified the language of the California constitution with respect to marriage. The previous wording, enacted to remove restrictions on mixed race marriages was legally vague. The GOP appointed California Supreme Court judges actually showed restraint when they ruled based upon the law, not their beliefs that the previous proposition had violated the language of the California Constitution.

Apparently, Californians don't want quite as much change and the Democrats do. They have seen what the Homosexual Agenda is and they don't like it. I only hope they feel the same way about Obama in a few short months.

I live in her district...and would run myself, but I'd never get over 15% of the vote! Consider that Nancy Pelosi got 72% and second place was CINDY SHEEHAN with 16%! The Republican, Dana Walsh, got only 9 percent. The people are loons out here.
