McCain Owes Sarah Some Straight Talk
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 11/11/2008 | WSJ Editorial Board

Where's John McCain's honor when we need it?

We'll find out tonight, when the Arizona Republican appears on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. In the week since the election, Mr. McCain's campaign team has leaked some nasty stuff about Sarah Palin. These leaks are personal, and they speak more to the character of Mr. McCain and the leakers than they do to Mrs. Palin. So it will be telling if Mr. McCain stands up for his partner and says how offended he has been by what some of his staffers have done to her.

I wonder what this relationship would have been like if they had won?

Sarah would have overshadowed him; they probably feared it then and they fear it now.

Probably not unlike Kennedy and LBJ.

Truly, is anyone really surprised there’s hardball politics going on?

The WSJ has some nads publishing anything in defense of Palin. Fund is a major proponent of big government Republicanism. Just another backstabber who must be marginalized and forgotten.

Dick Cheney is the odd VP; a vp who actually had a job. John McCain would have returned to the old style of a silent VP with the exception that he would have gladly had Sarah Palin be the “first lady of special needs children.”

I wish they’d won, but losing is no better or worse for Sarah Palin. Her name has been made. Now she has to turn that into political capital. She can easily announce for the presidency in 2012. She has to win the process, but I don’t think there’s any problem getting her name under consideration.

I really think conservatives need 2 things:

1. A pro-religion conservative caucus within the republican party.

2. A better primary process that doesn’t permit a candidate to run away with the nomination early on. I’d get rid of the winner-take-all aspect of state primaries. I’d be in favor of candidates taking all on the basis of counties they’ve won.

...has been by what some of his staffers have done to her.

..the same "staffers" will be sniffing around for work soon, it's good to politically assault the other side when you can find work for 4 years..."see see, I'm really a scumbag for you"

As Reagan said: "It's amazing what you can accomplish, if you don't care who gets the credit."

Palin was a huge asset to McCain. She made him look so much more appealing, and had they won she could have rallied public opinion to stand behind his initiatives. But I do suspect that McCain was (and would have been) jealous and would have tried to weaken her, put her on a shelf somewhere, and tried to govern all by himself.

McCain is right up there with Bob Dole as the worst Republican candidate ever.

Hey, McCain, you could barely get a thousand people to show up to see your sorry ass when Sarah was getting twenty thousand. You should kiss Sarah’s feet for bringing your sorry campaign up to a point where the loss, though huge, was not humiliating. You’re a tool and everybody knows it but you and your equally incompetent campaign staff.

Sorry Senator,

Too late. If your campaign had chosen to have a post-election Obama bash-fest, I am certain you would have jumped in with both feet in order to halt such action. It is shameful you can’t muster up the same amount of respect for your running mate as you could for bho.

You had me fooled.

A better primary process ...

Agreed. No crossover voting should be allowed. That's the only way the putz got the nomination. The Dems were pretty smart - by voting for McCain in the primary they could make sure we were going to wind up with a lib as president.

I agree. The difference is that Dole, though a lousy candidate, was fundamentally likable as a person.

the staffers are covering backside. we should ignore them.

i listened to todd palin several times describe the relationship between mccain and palin as very good. i dont think he is the type of man to say something if it was not true or for “show” since most of the time he had little to say.
i wish newspapers and groups would quit squealing about sarah palin. i have believed and still believe that mccains silence regarding palin is a joint decision by both of them. it does not do palin a ounce of good to have mccain continually on the air ways defending her. in fact it HURTS her. she needs to separate from that ticket. make her own path.
can you imagine if he kept coming out to her defense? who is going to believe him any way? every interview the msm would be talking about mccain and their relationship. instead they can discuss HER and her agenda and what she wants, not the campaign. lets be logical here peeps:)
i bet any amount of money that if mccain were screwing her over, she would have no qualms about nailing his backside to the wall too. if you believe she needs mccain or us to stick up for her, then she is weak and not ready to lead.
we have to move on. let sarah be sarah, to steal a phrase. she is doing FINE defending herself.
networks STILL want to interview her, she is good ratings. now that she is not associated with the mccain ticket she can call the shots, set the stage. if they want to interview her, they do so on her terms, not the campaigns.
lets back off. if we force mccain to come out and tie himself around sarah like a boulder, we will have no one to blame but ourselves when it hurts her chances in 2012

John McCain did not deserve a wonderful running mate like Sarah Palin.

Well, back during the primaries, I seem to remember that there were a fair number of folks on this board who embraced McCain as the only candidate who was "electable," usually in the context of putting down Duncan Hunter and his candidacy.

Where are those people now?

In Ohio there’s no registration of party. Whichever ballot you choose is your identified party. I agree about crossover voting. My point, though, is that some states aren’t set up that way.

If the party assigns delegates by county, and candidates only get the counties they win, then that would lessen the impact of crossover voting in any state. It would also mean that a candidate has to appeal to all conservative voters across the country before they lock the nomination down.

A third change I’d like is that the new conservative caucus agree on no more than 2 names to promote for the campaign with the less successful candidate pledged to drop out and assign delegates to the more successful conservative candidate at some point in the nominating process.

I posted weeks ago that, after the initial accolades, VP Palin would be marginalized to state funerals and the official daily inquiry of the President's health.

McCain's ego would not allowed her much prominence in the new administration. Her prominence grated on his ego even during the campaign, as she drew tens-of-thousands and he drew a few hundred.

McCain (team) wouldn't even let her do many interviews during the campaign -- and then they blamed her for their loss.

we should ignore them.

..no just the opposite, they should be exposed for what they are, people who can not be trusted, who cave, and on the way out, blame others for their own failures....EXPOSE THEM ALL

The reason Sarah appeals to conservatives so well is that she believes in more limitations of government than McCain....and far, far more than Obama. McCain and Palin were an incongruous team that would have had some embarrassing moments because of these differences.

Sarah is the better straight talker; and her politics is based on limited government, not the semi-capitulation-to-get-votes-and-notoriety that McCain waged with his Campaign Finance Reform law. She is the better conservative and we all know it.

The Republican party needs to go back to the basics:

1. The Constitution
2. Ethics and Virtues

I disagree with the focus on religion. If we focus on virtue and ethics, we gain those who are religious and those who believe in the good qualities of character. That is a good dividing line to publicize and exploit politically.
