South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford: Conservatives didn't lose election, GOP did
CNN ^ | November 11th, 2008 | Mark Sanford

Posted on 11/11/2008 6:11:43 PM PST by MadIsh32

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) -- For all Americans, this election represents another glass ceiling broken, and in the words of my 16-year-old, "That's very cool." The election of the first black president is an inspiring and transformational moment for our country.

I am happy for President-elect Barack Obama, and for many who supported him. They and, in many cases, their ancestors fought for this day for centuries as they experienced first-hand the unthinkable wrong of segregation. As an American, I wish him every success.

Beyond the presidential race, it goes without saying the Republican Party took a shellacking nationally. Some on the left will say our electoral losses are a repudiation of our principles of lower taxes, smaller government and individual liberty. But Tuesday was not in fact a rejection of those principles -- it was a rejection of Republicans' failure to live up to those principles.

I believe in the Biblical notion of taking the log out of your own eye before worrying about the splinter in someone else's. Accordingly, let me focus on my own party and the way Ted Stevens personifies what went wrong in the election.

As a senior ranking Republican from Alaska, he was a proud champion of pork barrel spending and bridges to nowhere, and stayed so long that he developed a blind eye to ethical lapses that would be readily seen by scout leaders and soccer moms alike.

Republicans have campaigned on the conservative themes of lower taxes, less government and more freedom -- they just haven't governed that way. America didn't turn away from conservatism, they turned away from many who faked it.

Spent most of my time in the area surrounding Summerton, Manning and Santee. That area’s litter was worse than any area I’ve ever seen in my entire life. We were all commenting on it. It was like you couldn’t even go fifty feet without seeing litter everywhere.

We know folks who spend their winters there and they said that one thing they hate to have to show people when they come to visit. The litter! It truly was disgraceful.

I wasn’t saying that Charleston was terrible (litter problem), just the other areas we saw. We drove from WV to SC.

The next time we go to SC, we want to visit your area. I have heard it is very beautiful. :)

Ihave lived in SC for about 20 years now. I have over a mile of paved road bordering my home property. At a stop sign, and along the road, I see a continual barrage of cans, bottles, fast food bags, etc. Although fines and penalties are high, I have yet to hear of one person caught littering. The police completely ignore the issue as being beneath their dignity. There is the problem.

Mark Sanford is so far ahead of the times it is pitiful. He is one of the few politicians I look up to and admire.

I love Mark Sanford and I love my second home (soon to be only home) in the perfect state of South Carolina.

Rush got a call late in the show yesterday from a guy living in a western state lamenting his states increasing liberalism due to, according to him, an influx of liberal Californians.

Rush commented back that North Carolina went from red to blue this year in part because of the torrents of liberal yankees moving to the Tar Heel state.

I hope that you're not one of those that plan to move here and then try to change things to like it was 'up north'.

Example: we're going through a zoning debate in Oconee County. My neighbor, an Oconee County native, went to a hearing last Friday night. Only 4 people showed up that were for zoning, all relocated yankees. He said they were hostile, arrogant and argumentative and it looks like we're going to get some damn zoning! It's the camel nose in the tent.

My point being, conservatism is local as well as national. You come down here, move in next to me and then try to change the rules because you don't like the smell of my horses and cows, listening to my dogs barking at night or hearing the sounds of high powered rifle rounds being discharged from my private rifle range.

Please keep that in mind when you permanently invade The Palmetto State.....................

Wow, what a welcoming mat for this Yankee and her family. Not all Yankees are liberals, is this the welcome that you will have out for this fellow Freeper? Cowboyway, I survived the New York City Public School System: Elementary, Junior High, High School and CUNY and I still have my conservative faculties intact. Fellow Southern Freepers, if I move down South with my family - which the way things are going there is a possibility down the road, will I be welcomed or not?/Just Asking - seoul62......

Reread my post. If you profess to be a conservative, be a conservative locally as well.

I’m a witness to the yankee invasion first hand and the increased demand for more county services, bigger government and more regulation on the local level which always means higher taxes.

Will you be welcomed or not? I guess that depends on you and where you move.

Sarah Palin is a DOLL!!!! She is beautiful, intelligent, and right on on all the key issues.

Her traditional American values and unabashed faith amke her the target of every leftist demon in America.

She needs our support.

What a shame. Does your state have groups that volunteer to adopt a section of road? We even have that in Alaska. A business, or group, or even individuals, adopt a mile of road and clean up the litter that others have created.

It is difficult to catch those that litter. They don’t usually do it when someone is looking. But if someone sees them they definitely should at least report it.

First let me say you will be heartily welcomed to SC. People generally are very friendly but the native born southerners will consider you to be a Yankee forever. Not a real problem and makes for some good laughs. If you move to the beach areas you wont find many southerns. Nor the south suburbs of Charlotte. The rest of the state is deep south overall.
As for the litter, small sections of roads are adopted but for the most part not. Its mostly the poor, and a lot of poor are in SC, who pitch their trash all over. As long as they arent fined, it will continue.
