Jim Jones' followers enthralled by his skills as a speaker

The key to understanding the tragedy that was Jonestown lies in the oratory skills of the Peoples Temple founder, Jim Jones.

"He was very charismatic," Leslie Wagner-Wilson, a Jonestown survivor, says of the Rev. Jim Jones.

With the cadence and fervor of a Baptist preacher, the charm and folksiness of a country storyteller and the zeal and fury of a maniacal dictator, Jones exhorted his followers to a fever pitch, audiotapes recovered from Jonestown reveal.

As he spoke, they applauded, shouted, cheered. One follower who survived the "revolutionary suicide" at Jonestown on November 18, 1978, said that Jones was the most dynamic speaker he had ever heard.

Like all powerful speakers, Jones' greatest asset was his ability to determine what listeners wanted to hear and give it to them in simple language that appealed to them on an almost instinctual level.

Move the voting age to 35 except for military.

Jim Jones preached exactly the same stuff as Jeremiah Wright. Exactly the same.

I did a lot of construction work in the ghetto in San Francisco during the People’s Temple era. After the Jonestown holocaust the Black people there were in shock. Everybody knew or was related to a koolaid drinker. When they auctioned off what was left the Temple was opened to the public and I went and poked around. Chilling stuff backstage.

People say this about Jim Jones all the time.

However, 99% of the people who ever heard him speak never bothered with him again.

He never had more than 3,000 followers at any one time, and about 500-1000 of them were children who were there because of their parents, not because of his eloquence.

He convinced about 500-600 adults to follow him to Guiana, of whom as many as 200 began questioning his motives and behavior.

Far from having a general and mesmerizing appeal to the population as a whole, it is clear that his rhetoric really only worked on emotionally disturbed individuals.

Do a search on Dr. Milton Erickson, M.D and Conversational Hypnosis.

I believe the technique was scripted into DUH 1's speeches, which is why he faltered so badly when off script (not on the teleprompter).

"Does this sound familiar?"

Yeah, Adolph Hitler, Bill Clinton and Barrak Obama.

Maybe because we were all raised with the saying, "if you can't say anything nice..."

Ergo, you can't say anything nice about his "spread the wealth," policies, his infanticide policies, his appeasement policies, his flip-flip-flip-flop foreign policies (e.g., depends on his audience), his Civilian national force policy...

So, you compliment him on his public speaking.

Failure to worship Obama is not racist. Let's not confuse racism with Commie-phobia.

Too many still think “that one” is all that. Kids need to learn who some of our past “frauds” were.

Our schools are rewritting history. The indoctrination of our kids is alive and well, and unfortunatly...the private schools (at least a few in my opinion) are leaning left as well - in the name of “tolerance.”

Jones’s organization also supported numerous left wing causes and politicians in the San Francisco area.

"I’ve never thought that Obama was a great speaker, and his lately acquired, phony, homeboy accent was annoying and insulting, as it should have been to African-Americans."

Oh, I hated obama's fake accent. Annoying is right! I heard him on youtube reading his book and he had no accent what so ever. So I wondered why it wasn't insulting to his followers. Why they didn't realize he was talking down to them every time he opened his mouth. Like he thought they were beneath him, or just plain dumb. It reminded me so much of kerry and his put on accent, talking down to people in Ohio.

I never thought he was a great speaker either. I just don’t get it. If anything, his speeches annoyed the hell outta me and I had to turn him off. I just can’t see what these folks see in this guy, I really can’t!

Actually, the reason he won was because less republicans voted, not because more democrats voted. So, if that many more black democrats voted, what happened to the difference in numbers of white democrats? Did they not vote either?

CNN November 13, 2008 on Jim Jones
...By the end at Jonestown, Jones was more rock star than preacher...
CNN August 6, 2004 on Barrack Obama
(Obama) ...He's the party's rock star. The lanky candidate speaks with grace, often without notes...
