SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

During the 2008 campaign, many bishops spoke out on abortion more boldly than four years earlier, telling Catholic politicians and voters that the issue should be the most important consideration in setting policy and deciding which candidate to back. A few church leaders said parishioners risked their immortal soul by voting for candidates who support abortion rights.

But bishops differ on whether Catholic lawmakers—and voters—should refrain from receiving Communion if they diverge from church teaching on abortion. Each bishop sets policy in his own diocese. In their annual fall meeting, the nation's Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights.

An institution run by mortal men for mortal men, albeit encumbered with pretty ceremonies that obscure the central teaching of The Gospel.

As I said, stop changing the subject. I am talking about the Catholic Church.

You're belief, but as provably "true" as the moon is made of green cheese.

How reassuring to learn there are people who know the mind of God.

Of course the Pope knows the mind of God insofar as he reveals it.

You want proof, stick to science.

Religion is a matter of faith. You either believe in His Church, or something less.

Precisely, faith. I choose not to encumber myself with historical accretions but will rely on God's word as revealed in scripture. All the rest is nothing more than barnacles encrusted on the hull of a ship.

Your own personal interpretation of scripture is of no use to me. I will stick with the Church founded by Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit to this very day, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Those who want to settle for less, or whatever they want to make of the Gospel, they are on their own.

The Catholic Church is the Pillar and Ground of the Truth.

What you're saying about the economy is only shakily related to abortion, and to my mind it smacks of rationalization.

If some politician were to authorize the professional and hygienic dismemberment of a moderate number of Free Republic members, but were "good" on the economy, I doubt that any of us would support him on the grounds that with a really good economy, hardly anyone would want to dismember FReepers.

"To simply assert something is so, even if you do it in what you regard is a pleasantly aesthetic fashion, does not make it true."

This is hardly debatable, but neither is it much related to the present discussion, as I understand it.

You dismissed some religious ideas as being "medieval." "Medieval" isn't a category pertaining to truth/falsity or value/disvalue. One could as well derogate geometry by saying it is ancient and hellenistic, or disparage roast meat as paleolithic.

Yea, how about the New Testament story of the rich man in hell who wanted Abraham to warn his brothers? How about in Revelation when the saints cry out to the Lamb for justice?

Priests are only human. They can be wrong in their theology. People act as though they are perfected when they are ordained. The only perfection in the Church is her Head, Jesus and her soul, the Holy Spirit. The body, us, is way imperfect.

One may only vote for a pro-abortion candidate if both candidates are pro-abortion. Then consideration of other factors are relevant. Abortion is the first of the five non-negotiables.

Through good economies and bad, since 1973 the number of abortions has remained fairly constant. Some years up and some years down. It has quite simply become a form of birth control for millions. The best and most effective way to reduce the numbers is to once again make it illegal. Millions of women have had abortions because of legality. Illegality will remove the option and then more babies will be born or “gasp” some women might even amend their sexual activity. You know, only have sex with men who are their husbands or at the very least, men they have known longer than a few weeks.

I have a niece who got pregnant but didn’t want to marry the father. She claimed that “marriage was just too big of a commitment”. Funny. After all, an abortion is over and done in a couple of hours. One might actually have to work at a marriage and if there is a divorce, then oh boy, that could be really uncomfortable.

Well, okay, let me be more precise. For medieval, substitute "uninformed" or "bordering on superstition" if you like.

I say it because it is true. If you want to deny history to justify your own personal interpretation of Scripture, help yourself.

Just don’t expect me to cooperate in the denial.

I would never expect you to deny the voices you hear. But they do have medication.
