Begging Your Pardon
IBD Editorials ^ | November 14, 2008

Justice: Two Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a drug smuggler have been resentenced for the crime of protecting the borders of the United States. Mr. President, you do not have the right to remain silent.

Former agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean are 20 months into their sentences for shooting drug dealer Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, who tried to elude the two agents after driving a van near Fabens, Texas, that was found to hold 743 pounds of marijuana. He tried to flee back to Mexico and was shot in the buttocks by the agents who had reason to believe he was armed.

Last week the two agents had their resentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cordone. The hearing was prompted by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals' throwing out a minor obstruction of justice count. Ramos and Compean were resentenced to virtually their original 11- and 12-year sentences, the bulk of which is a mandatory sentence of 10 years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Ramos and Compean were charged under section 924(c) of the criminal code. This section is intended to punish felons who use firearms in the commission of a crime, not law enforcement officers attempting to apprehend lawbreakers.

Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, who plans to introduce clarifying legislation, says: "It was never the intent of Congress to have U/S.C. Section 924 (c) apply to law enforcement officers."

W should pardon them but I wouldn’t hold my breath. If Obama really wanted to rub W’s nose in it he could pardon them as his first act as president.

I wonder how we can contact Gov. Sarah Palin and see if she can do something to try to urge President Bush to pardon, or at least commute Ramos and Compean.

If Gov. Palin did this, she would be an even bigger herorine than she is with conservatives.

Keep calling President Bush and sending him e-mails:

Pinging some of the Hunter supporters, because this is so important to him. Please let me know if you want on/off my low volume list.

I’ve left multiple messages for Bush. Hunter and Rorhbacher and a few others are still trying to twist Bush’s arm.

It would be worth a try, I suppose, but I am not particularly enamored of Palin, so I would not be one to ask...

“I’ve left multiple messages for Bush.”

Me too, but I wish as many people would contact him that contacted our politicians about amnesty. We stopped that, and if we only had mega people, we could stop the incarceration of these two heros, Ramos and Compean, as well.

I wish some of the talk show hosts would get on it so strongly.

Glad that Hunter and Rorhbacher are on it.

I just sent a nice letter to the Whitehouse regarding our request for pardoning these two border agents. Hopefully enough of us will get through to the POTUS and he shall see the fairness and the wisdom we request of him to perform.

“I just sent a nice letter to the Whitehouse regarding our request for pardoning these two border agents. “

Thank you for doing that!

If enough of us contact the president, maybe he will AT LEAST communte their sentence for time served, as Rep. Duncan Hunter suggested.

Davila got less time than the border agents.

I'm sticking up for chicagolady, Kaslin. I don't think he should be brought to trial for war crimes, but he should be brought to task (nice word, huh?) for trashing our economy.

I believe his and Cheney's agenda, as Establishment Men, was to toss us to the wolves from the very beginning, and bankrupt our country. And I thought that long ago.

The Bush family have long been One Worlders, and that means they need to scrap our constitution. They don't want illicit drugs to stop coming over the borders. They want every young person under some kind of control - brain-dead or military, or indebted to banks, and the rest of us on some kind of pill so as to enrich the pharmaceuticals.

Sr. Bush was liason to China (think hippies), then CIA, then vice-president, and then president.

Flame me. I know I'm right!

He trashed the economy? Are you also drinking the liberal’s Koolaid? You are forgetting that the liberals are in charge in Congress. There was nothing wrong with the economy when the republicans were in the majority and that went back to 1994 when they got the majority.
