Firearm sales shoot up as gun owners worry about Barack Obama administration (Poll to FReep also)
The New York Daily News ^ | November 17, 2008 | ALISON GENDAR and CORKY SIEMASZKO

From sea to shining sea, the election of Barack Obama has sparked a run on guns by firearm fans who fear stiffer rules are on the way.

During election week, the FBI did 374,510 background checks on prospective gun owners, compared with 251,804 in the same week last year. Last month, the G-men did checks on 285,894 people buying handguns, compared with 223,141 in Oct. 2007. "It is a significant jump," Special Agent Jason Pack said.

Obama has vowed to protect gun ownership rights, but as an Illinois state lawmaker, he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms.

Bucking the national trend, local New York gun shops report no major rise in business, and cops have seen no big increase in gun permit applications.

"New Yorkers that have guns often get them from other states, Pennsylvania and Florida in particular," theorized Evan Thies, a gun control advocate and City Council candidate. "New York City has the toughest gun control laws in the nation."

Still, even city gun dealers worry that an Obama presidency will usher in even tougher laws.

"We don't deal in handguns, and personally, I don't know why anybody would want a machine gun," said Guy Davies, executive director of Holland & Holland Sporting Weapons on E. 57th St., where the cheapest gun is a handmade, $60,000 hunting rifle.

"From our point of view, these laws are a step in the wrong direction," said Davies.

Elsewhere in the country, there is evidence the heat-packing public is stocking up.

Gun peddlers in Georgia have staged "Obama Sales." Up in Sarah Palin country, the demand is so big that Alaska gun dealers are running out of ammunition. Even in Obama's home state of Illinois, business has been brisk at rural gun shops.

In Pennsylvania, they aren't just clinging to their guns, as Obama said during the campaign, they're stockpiling them.

"We've easily doubled our normal sales of guns," said Jere Dunkelberger, who owns Dunkelberger's Sports Outfitter in Stroudsburg, Pa. "The biggest sellers are security-style shotguns and handguns. Mostly a combination of self-protection and home protection firearms."

"The increase in firearms sales was predictable," said Lawrence Keane of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "It's clear from President-elect Obama's voting record, and the promises he continues to make, that gun control will be coming back to the White House."

So-called "journalists" don't want to understand gun rights, freedom of religion or any other conservative issues, they'd rather take the easy way out and be snarky. Hope that unemployment check covers the expensive apartment rent, Alison and Corky!

Were buying two possibly three—revolver, handgun, and possibly a long gun. We are taking lessons and looking forward to range time. If we don’t need ‘em it will be good sport practicing. If I ever need to use it I will know how. :-). I learned how to fire a pistol and a 22 when I was six. My daddy had us out there in the woods practicing. Six was way too many years ago. LOL.

Journalists not understanding gun rights might be charitable as I often think that they really might understand them but are subservient to the anti gun dialectic as sell outs just to maintain their high profile & “good standing” reputation -ie: controlled - with their bosses as reporters.

Was in a big gun shop today looking for some accessories. I already have all the guns I and five generations of my descendants can use.

They were cleaned out of EVERY semi-automatic rifle except an M1 carbine and a couple of overpriced Steyr AUG knockoffs. No doubt those will be gone tomorrow.

My husband went to a gun show last Saturday and he said it was jam packed. He's also got backorders on his reloading supplies that may take up to 4 weeks to get here when they usually get here in 3 days.

You reckon this has anything to do with it?

Assault Weapons Ban Introduced…by Five R.I.N.O.sThese five supposed Republican are nothing more than jackasses in elephant's clothing. Rep. Mark Kirk has introduced a bill, H.R. 6257: Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008, which would "To reinstate the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act." The bill has been co-sponsored by the other four jackasses listed above. All of them claim to be Republicans.

Normally, reloading components are the most readily available of firearms "stuff," but... since Duh!1 is obviously an enemy of the 2A ( not to mention the whole Bill of Rights, see my post for details ) and since firearms are useless without ammo, expect sales for reloading gear and ammo to go thru the roof...

Maybe one guy per neighborhood or group of gun owners should buy reloading gear and sell to his friends, neighbors and relatives.

Excuse me but...
There seems to me to be a practical limit on how much and what type of ammo one can stock.
If you hunt, about a dozen cartridges per season harvests enough meat for a family of 4 for a year.
If you invision fighting off hordes of angry commies, you may be able to get off a couple hundred rounds protecting family and friends.
So what’s the point in reloading et cetera?
Just buy what suits you now and be done with it.
Where am I wrong on this?

Simple answer: our "government" wants to make ammunition all but unavailable as a method to control and then ban firearms.

Those of us who are stockpiling ammunition and reloading equipment are doing what we have to to ensure that we can keep functional firearms well into the future.

You must not remember the glorious Carter and Clinton years - the Obama era will be much worse.

Competetion, practice, and fun. I go through 20-25 thousand rounds a year for these purposes.

My plan exactly...:) Actually not to sell, but to help out my co-workers..they bring the the brass and their powder choice (they buy materials) and I’ll reload it for them.—for a small fee..:)

next I need to find 2 inexpensive used shot shell loaders, one in 20 and one in 12

I can fine tune my reloads so that they are far more accurate then factory ammunition.

Oh, did I mention it's cheaper?

“Illegally”?
Here in Florida it is legal to go to a gun show. Take a firearm unloaded. Walk around the gun show showing off the firearm. And if some other person sees the firearm and a deal is agreed upon it is legal to make the sale. No licence or waiting period. Just hand over the money. Get a receipt if you care to an go on your way.
Same thing is you say place an add in the papers want adds and just sell a weapon as long as you are not a gun merchant.
