Dawson’s Whites-Only Country Club Past Gets GOP Attention
The Charleston City Paper ^ | November 27, 2008 | Greg Hambrick

Posted on 11/27/2008 7:41:41 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative

Just as soon as South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson announces that he’s running to chair the national party, a story is disseminated by his opponents (note: fellow Republicans) referring to his recent membership in a whites-only country club. Dawson left the club in August, days before he first suggested that he might be looking to the national stage.

As usual, the story says more about backwards South Carolina than it does about Dawson. My absolute favorite part is where the reporter and some pundits do a little guessing on the reason for his separation from the club.

“It’s something that would have a cleansing effect just in case (Sen. John) McCain would choose him to be head of the Republican National Committee,” said political scientist and GOP activist Neal Thigpen, who has been active in Republican politics for 40 years.

Dawson dismissed that as “hypothetical.”

...you know that the GOP has an image problem with regards to race relations. It’s totally unfair and untrue, but it’s there nonetheless.

Yes, and it makes it very hard for us to attract minorities into the party. Sadly, those who came before us allowed the party to be slandered that way by the liberals, and they also meekly let it stick, after the fact.

I just hope this wouldn’t be an issue for our party if Katon Dawson becomes the RNC chairman.

Unfortunately, I don't have high hopes for that outcome. We're going to have to work like the devil to dead agent the "party of the white boys" label. Sad to say, but it's true.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH REPUBLICANS?

Why not refer to Obamas fund raising dinners in the last year, where whites were excluded, and only racial minorities were allowed to attend?

Point out the presses double standard EVERY TIME.

anyone stupid enough to belong to a “whites only” club in this day and age has no business in the leadership of the party. It show a complete lack of judgment and therefore the inability to properly lead.

In answer to your question, George Putnam, one of the great conservatives of the past 90 years, was a white who was a lifelong member of the NAACP. Also a lifelong Democrat. Like Reagan before him, claimed that the party left him but he would rather fight to reclaim it from within. He felt the same about some of the leadership of the NAACP.

Waste of time. Perhaps we should push white solidarity via the GOP, using politically correct themes. The GOP only won 55% of the white vote. If we could get to 75% it would spell certain victory. The Obama candidacy was won by racial solidarity: blacks, Latinos, and Asians voting for the party that will deliver spoils to them via race-based programs. Making this clear is never discussed, but it should be.

Waste of time.

I disagree. It's imperative that the GOP uses some media savvy and effective recruitment over the next four years to attract a broader racial mix into the party.

The fact is, the racial demographics of America are shifting toward a melanin-rich majority. In some states, minorities, have now reached parity with whites. Ignoring this shift will only spell certain doom for our party.

“NAACP is black only club”

There is a difference between a group that has a predominantly one race membership and a group that officially does not accept members of another race. You don’t have to be black to be a member of the NAACP. In other words, they don’t discriminate based on race. Here is their membership form.

effective recruitment over the next four years to attract a broader racial mix into the party.

Why attract any group based on some PC demographic if the Repubs give up conservatism?

That is precisely the tact that has given the Rats complete control of the federal gubmint as of Jan. 09. The tried playing towards the middle-left, lost the base and BANG! lost it all.

The Repubs need to tighten down the conservative hatch and gather in the base if they want to have a chance of regaining power. If people want to join the Republican party let them join as conservatives, not based on race.

You're dreaming!

Get real people! Personally I would question the judgment of a person in politics, heck, any person, who belongs/belonged to a whites-only club! And please, no comparison to the CBC or NAACP which are "advocacy" groups, not country clubs. A whites-only country club! Holy crap that's a giant electrified red flag! What is the matter with these people!?! Who in their right mind would support somebody with that sort of stain on them? Yeah I said stain. This is a battle for the future of the party and conservatism, and we're gonna put up someone who can be slapped right next to the Left's favorite photos of police dogs and water cannons? I am flabbergasted.

I think in this day and age, any politician from any party who would stand on the doorstep of a “white’s only” club of any sort is an obvious moron.

If we want to keep losing, we will continue to let morons run the party.

In many ways, too bad that it ain't.

I could live in a rap free world where kids wore their pants above their butts, where a great general from WII was president, where most families the dad went to work and mom stayed home, where the majority of people weren't looking for handouts from .gov, where most of the products that we bought were made right here in the USA, where legal infanticide wasn't condoned by the newly elected president, where there was no need to legally define marriage and where singing the national anthem, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, displaying the 10 Commandments or wishing someone a Merry Christmas wasn't controversial.................

Who is gonna do it?

Michael Steele hasn’t shown any ability to mobilize and energize the grassroots and rebuild local party organizations.

Saul Anuzis has had a terrible record of getting Republicans elected in Michigan.

Newt is out.

Mike Duncan is coming off a very poor election cycle.

Katon Dawson is the only one I think is qualified.
