"Time for Leagues to Do Something About Players With Guns" (Abolish 2nd amendment)
Wash Post ^ | 12/1/2008 | John Feinstein

Posted on 12/01/2008 4:47:31 PM PST by GreaterSwiss

Now, let's not start screaming about the Second Amendment. To begin with, the amendment should be abolished -- a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to raise a militia for protection and to hunt for food. Clearly no one needs to raise a militia these days, and those who hunt for a living can be licensed to do so.

It would be nice if President-elect Obama had the time to focus his energies on repeal of the Second Amendment, but he first has to deal with a broken economy and the incredibly wrong-headed war started by his predecessor. What's more, the issue of gun rights causes almost as much screaming from the right as abortion rights, the irony being that those yelling the loudest about the right to life are usually those yelling almost as loud about their right to carry weapons that kill.

On the contrary, now more than ever, there is need for a civilian militia.

We have much to fear from a leader like Obama.

To begin with, the amendment should be abolished ...

What an ass. If you feel that way, raise a mass movement, and push for a constitutional amendment. That's how we "abolish" parts of the constitution in this country.

Good luck!

Incredible that the WaPo gives this moron ink!

“The owners and players should agree that players can’t own handguns. That won’t prevent players who like to hunt from hunting. If a player feels unsafe for any reason, he can ask his team to provide security — all NFL teams have good-sized security forces, most of them retired law enforcement officials — or they can hire their own security guards.

“Now, let’s not start screaming about the Second Amendment. To begin with, the amendment should be abolished — a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to raise a militia for protection and to hunt for food. Clearly no one needs to raise a militia these days, and those who hunt for a living can be licensed to do so.”

The Second Amendment is one of the things I love about America. When I was 22, I took some of my savings from my little sojourn in Vietnam, walked into hardware store, and bought my very own Smith and Wesson revolver. What struck me was that the very act of doing so, without so much as a fare-thee-well to any officious official or imperious lackey whatever, mad me a free man in a sense that I had never felt before.
I called my mum in the old country and told her about it. She said, “Well, it’s because you’re in the army. Everyone knows soldiers can have guns.” She was flabbergasted when I told her that anyone who was not legally, and specifically, prohibited from buying a handgun could so in this country.

That’s right, Fecalstein — Our issue of gun rights SAVES lives, while abortion snuffs them out, so STFU!!

The Regress cannot repeal any Amendment, f'Heaven's sake, certainly not by itself.

Repeal of any Amendment, as in the case of Amendment XXI, must be in the form of a new Amendment. The Regress might pass any bloody thing it likes, and your '2/3rds' applies to that as a Constitutional requirement, but whatever nonsense they pass as a purported Amendment must subsequently be ratified by 3/4th + 1 of the legislatures of the several states.

"The Dems don't have a two-thirds majority in Congress."

Even if they did, they wouldn't be able to do away with one of the Bill of Rights. They are part of the Supreme Law and untouchable.

This is a bogus quote, never said by Washington. It is a creation like a fake George Carlin rant. There are plenty of real 2nd amd founding father quotes, we don't need to use invented ones.

George Washington: “Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the people’s liberty teeth (and) keystone... the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable... more than 99% of them [guns] by their silence indicate that they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference [crime]. When firearms go, all goes, we need them every hour.” (Address to 1st session of Congress)

History gives us some words for unarmed populations. They are called “slaves,” “peasants,” and “serfs.”

Ideally, the league should teach trigger discipline if Plaxico Buress is the example.

Now, let’s not start screaming about the FIRST Amendment.

To begin with, the amendment should be abolished — a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to print local newspapers to talk politics. Clearly not for giant media corporations to put imbeciles talking politics on the sports page.

The author of this gem is a complete moron. The NFL has NOTHING to do with the second amendment. And the second amendment has NOTHING to do with hunting.

Someone send this idiot a copy of the federalist papers, or at least an accurate history book.
