Ramsey County [Minnesota] finds 171 uncounted ballots
Minnesota Public Radio ^ | December 2, 2008 | Curtis Gilbert

Posted on 12/02/2008 11:09:05 AM PST by Zakeet

Recount officials in Ramsey County found 171 ballots today that weren't counted on election night.

The county's Elections Manager Joe Mansky says an optical scan vote counting machine broke down in Maplewood during the initial count.

It was replaced, but local election judges didn't run some of the ballots through the new machine.

The previously uncounted ballots were from Maplewood's 6th precinct. Republican Sen. Norm Coleman's unofficial lead over DFL challenger Al Franken was 215 votes before the recount began.

The deadline for local officials to complete their recount is Friday.

Why, oh why, do I have a feeling Frankenstein will win - thanks to “found” ballots - this thing?

If this is true and if the precinct covers mainly single family dwellings, Coleman’s lead should increase.

So what was the vote in Maplewood’s 6th precinct so far?

Isn’t that EXACTLY the number needed to win? I made a joke the other day about 172 ballots will show up for Franken. Life imitates art.

Sheesh.

I can’t find a Maplewood 6th precinct in Ramsey County. There is a Maplewood P-2, and a Maplewood P-9. Both went to Franken, but only by a small amount. If the 171 ballots have the same proportion as the ones that were counted (and there’s no particular reason why they shouldn’t), this would probably add 10 or 20 votes to Franken at most.

Unless of course this Maplewood “6th precinct” which I can’t find has a much different demographic than the two Maplewood Precincts I did find.

If there is no demonstrable chain-of-custody, these ballots should be discarded unexamined.

this is Washington state redux....

it can not be legal to "find" votes....the election was certified by each county when they did their counts and that's the number that should be accepted....

when does this crap end?

Even if they are likely Coleman votes, to accept them would open the door to many similiar “exceptions”. I would keep the boat as stable as possible until some court order tips it first.

how could they have certified the original count ?

I wonder if those from the broke machine had already been manually added to the final totals ?

I wonder what were the counts(if any) on the machine that broke down ?

My guess on the “new” count:
Franken 170, Coleman 0, 1 spoiled.

OK, I found it:
DEAN BARKLEY 197 14.24
NORM COLEMAN 542 39.19
AL FRANKEN 628 45.4
Assuming the 171 found votes break the same way, the net gain to Franken would be 10.6 votes.
