Obama May Cancel Space Shuttle Replacement

WASHINGTON — U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's NASA transition team is asking U.S. space agency officials to quantify how much money could be saved by canceling the Ares 1 rocket and scaling back the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle next year.

Obama pledged during his campaign to inject an additional $2 billion into NASA aimed in part at narrowing the gap between the space shuttle's retirement and the introduction of a successor system.

While NASA Administrator Mike Griffin and his senior managers are adamant that Ares and Orion are the right vehicles to fill that role, Obama did not endorse either system by name during his campaign.

He can do what he wants to as far as I am concerned.

I don’t really care.

The fools and idiots are in control now. Let them run things.

Better get used to the idea of Obama cutting programs. Literally EVERY federal program out there. BEGIN with a 25% across the board cut, and there is no conceivable way the big four: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Defense, are going to be unscathed, either.

At the very least, there will have to be means testing for EVERYTHING. Nobody who has any income, retirement, or savings will get anything from the government. Military pay for enlisted personnel will be reduced to close to room and board. Even WWII pay of $50/month for a private will be unlikely.

Entire government departments will be closed indefinitely, which will soon become permanent.

Right now, the US Post Office employs 786,000 employees. Their first round of layoffs has been announced as 40,000. Before all is said and done, there will probably be fewer than 300,000 postal workers. This is a good indicator of an *essential* government department.

Unessential workers, departments and agencies will be closed, and their budgets diverted to keep essential departments and agencies open.

The DEA, Department of Interior, Education, Homeland Security, NASA, NOAA, and many, many others will be reduced to a minimal staff or eliminated entirely. Average government salaries of $47,000 may be reduced by 90%.

In total, the US government employs about 1.8 million people outside of the military and Post Office. This may have to be reduced to 800,000.

The zero will cut

The Shuttle
The ISS, all this money and no science to date.
THe F35 and stall any future F22 buys
ALL of the advanced combat systems existing or planned
ALL but 3 (or maybe 4) of the carrier battle groups
The planned increases for the Army and USMC will be phased out over 2 to 4 years

There may be additional manning cuts across the board in all services, tho the Coasties may be spared the brunt of the cuts. NOAA is toast.

Excellent news. It'll be nice to have a president who actually cuts big government programs for a change. Now we just have to convince him not to spend it all on something else.

NASA has become nothing more than a tool for environmentalist wackos...Where do you think all this global warming garbage came from?

Thats the other half

MORE food stamps
MORE “free” medical
More aid to dependant children
More school watchers
and on and on.

Buddy of mine sold his house and is moving onto his Crealock 37 to ‘full time’.

Plans to be in International waters by the 20th.
Something he has been planning for years, this just got him off dead center.

This is upsetting, Russia, Red China, India and others will get ahead of us in space. I think in today’s world, JFK would be considered more of a Republican, but even liberal Walter Cronkite supported the space program as well. Space travel is one good thing I know we can spend money on, it beats tossing it down the ratholes of Section 8 housing, welfare and crack addicts. My uncle is spinning in his grave now. B-(

The local newspaper is spinning this as a "win." Lots more rocket launches to generate GW data to be manipulated. "creating 1,700 new jobs" ... to replace the 7,000 shuttle jobs being lost. Oh, but not to worry, sez he, we'll make it up on volume.

The initiative is gone, the high ground is abandoned. Private enterprise will have to fill the gap.
