Judge rejects Bush attempt to speed up rule targeting illegal workers

PST SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge in San Francisco rejected the Bush administration's request today to speed up consideration of rules that would pressure employers to fire suspected illegal immigrants whose Social Security numbers didn't match records in the government's database.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer - who blocked the so-called no-match rule from taking effect in October 2007 - turned down a proposal by the Department of Homeland Security for an accelerated hearing schedule that might have allowed a new version to take effect before President Bush leaves office next month.

Instead, Breyer set a standard schedule for consideration of a lawsuit by labor unions and business groups challenging the rule, with written arguments planned through Feb. 24. He observed that the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama might want to take another look at the issue, said Scott Kronland, lawyer for the AFL-CIO and several other unions in the case.

"There was no policy reason for trying to expedite things to prevent a new administration from looking at these last-minute rules," Kronland said.

He noted that Homeland Security had taken more than a year after Breyer issued his injunction to submit its current version of the rule, which contains new rationales but is virtually identical to the previous proposal.

Pres. Bush had 8 years to do the right thing; now just weeks to go before he leaves ... this is suddenly a hot issue? What? Illegal Aliens were not an issue 8 years ago, or 7 years ago, or ..... but, suddenly NOW they are an important issue?

Judge Charles Breyer was appointed to the federal bench by President Clinton in 1997 and is the brother of liberal U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer who, in 2001, ruled that detained illegal aliens whose home countries won't take them back within 6 months must be released into American communities ( Zadvydas v. Davis, No. 99-7791)

::::::::::
It is all about his less-than-repectable legacy. Yes, he had eight opportune years, PLUS two Congressional majorities, alot of fence barbed-wire, and HE DID NOTHING. Well, not exactly to be correct — he SUPPRESSED attempts by the Border Patrol to do their job at the border, running interference for illegals, DELIBERATELY.

We know what his legacy is.

Nah, another part of his legacy: Allowing the clinton appointees to keep their jobs during his administration.

suddenly NOW they are an important issue?

Because they didn't vote Republican?

Because Americans suddenly need the "jobs Americans don't want to do"?

Because the aliens finally returned the real GWB, because the pod-clone thing wasn't working out for them?

I think he meant “fire” as in out of a cannon.

If you put them down the muzzle head first, the results can be really spectacular.

Gives a whole new meaning to “breach block”.

“Nah, another part of his legacy: Allowing the clinton appointees to keep their jobs during his administration.”

Clinton had many of his appointees transferred to Civil Service status prior to the end of his administration, which effectively made them impossible to fire by the Bush Administration. A slick “Slick Willy” move.

A recent article I don’t have the link for stated that Bush is going to do the same to the Democrats with some of his appointees. Turn about is fair play eh.

After the Supremes reject the rule of law in the Barry Soetoro birth certificate case, the only thing backing up the decisions of tin-pot dictators like this Charles Breyer will be the guns of the thugocracy which will be ruling the new Banana Republic of America.

I kinda like them odds...
