UW newspaper column sparks campus controversy [Seattle, gay marriage, man+sheep]

A column that ran in the University of Washington's student newspaper decrying gay marriage — and illustrated with the image of a man standing next to a sheep — has hundreds of students up in arms. But editors of The Daily are standing behind what they say is free speech.

Organizers of the campus group "Students for a Hate Free Daily" say they expect about 300 people to show up for a campus rally today after more than 1,000 signed up with the group online. The Graduate and Professional Student Senate, meanwhile, passed a resolution this week demanding the paper apologize.

But Sarah Jeglum, The Daily's editor-in-chief, says it's important to have a balance of viewpoints in the paper and isn't planning any sort of apology.

Written by senior John Fay, the Nov. 25 column is one in a series in which both a conservative and liberal commentator weigh in on an issue. Fay argues that homosexuality is an emotional tendency "that needs to be dealt with, not denied."

Over the years, I’ve come across stories about people pushing for the decriminalization of adult incest.

I have yet to hear a liberal provide a sensible answer to this question. Almost instantly they get visibly upset and attack the questioner...usually the word 'homophobic' is thrown in somewhere.

Now they are doing that to entire groups of people as a result of Proposition 8. Entire groups, that is, of people who are unlikely to fight back. Let's see them interrupt a religious service in a mosque or take their gay parade down the streets in areas of cities with large black populations.

I think the editor-in-chief needs a commendation for her stand on principle, whatever her own opinions on the matter. If more of today's press were like her, IMHO the press wouldn't be in the toilet laying off major numbers of employees.

Poor girl, she obviously forgot the MSM definition of balance: one moderately liberal view, one liberal view, and one radically liberal view. And if space runs short, drop the first one.

A story decrying gay marriage is noteworthy enough, but out of Seattle no less. What's next? One out of San Fran? ;-)

It makes me chuckle that they've gone to the effort to pass a resolution to demand an apology, instead of just merely demanding one. LOL, socialist collective thinking rears it's ugly head, legislating thought and behavior.

Sick, but no doubt pedophiles will love this. And why limit it to those who are just interested in sex? Why not something for the groups of people who would enjoy the benefits of married life without the romantic or sexual attachment? Why not groups of friends, 2 or 3 or more, maybe include their pets? It can get pretty absurd pretty fast, yet no doubt people will ask.

Freedom not Sodom!

Liberal types have no good answer to why allowing homosexual to marry is acceptable but not allowing siblings, first cousins, parents and their adult children and polygamist to marry is unacceptable.

They do, however, claim animals can't consent to marry.
