WASHINGTON (AP) - Barbra Streisand is visiting the White House on Sunday but says she'll play nice. "Art," she says, "transcends politics this weekend."

Streisand, a vocal critic of President George W. Bush, has the awkward honor of visiting 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during one of Washington's few A-list events.

Baba Streisand will try to be civil for one day of her life...... it's actually better that she be honored now, since if she received this honor under the Obamanation administration the mutual gushing lovefest would be unbearable.

Wow. Poor President Bush.

LOL!

It was Daltrey who said, "I get on my knees and pray we don't get fooled again," which will be the innaugural theme song of Sarah Palin.

If the nation survives to elect another president, that is.

Way to go Roger,
One fine collection of work.
As for Mrs. Brolin, too bad you ate all of Hermosa Beach and stopped being a singer and instead of grew fat and gross.

...glad to see the two surviving members of The Who honored....I always liked them anyway, but the free concert they gave in New York after 9-11 was the greatest single rock performance I’ve ever seen....they tore the house down at Madison Square Garden....and that’s saying something.

Awesome to read that BB King went there, and was honored in the 90’s. I saw him play a few years ago.

And Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey being honored is really cool.

I wonder if they had an SG available for Pete to smash...

Memories: Hillary Versus Barbra Streisand
Excerpt

Hillary had, in fact, rushed back to the White House after getting the news that Streisand—who performed at the inauguration—had spent a night in the plush and historic Lincoln bedroom while Hillary was grieving over her comatose father in a depressing and sterile hospital room. (The White House spin was that Hillary had returned to handle urgent business regarding her health care program.)

She had also heard that during her absence Bill, spiffy in a black-sequined tuxedo, had escorted Streisand and his mother, who had become very friendly with the singer, to the Gridiron Dinner, an annual media-politico event. There, in a party-hardy mood, the president wailed on his sax to the Coasters’ golden oldie, “Yakety Yak.”

Hillary was livid. Soon after her return, reporters noticed a vicious-looking scratch on the president’s face. Queried, White House spokeswoman Dee Dee Myers dismissed it as a shaving cut. Later, after leaving the White House, she hedged. “I’m the idiot who said he cut himself shaving before I’d seen him. Then I saw him—it was a big scratch, clearly not a shaving cut. Barbra Streisand was clearly around at the time,” she said.

Tales of a bloody confrontation between the Clintons prompted by Streisand’s visit circulated wildly. Paul Fray put it succinctly: “Hillary left Little Rock like a rocket, went back, and caught the son of a bitch. You know who got hit in the chops, who got smacked around.”

Much as I love Daltrey (on my list of Cool Old Guys), isn't he still a citizen of the UK? I thought such honors were only bestowed on Americans.

Nevertheless, here's hoping Daltrey does some mic turning and knocks out Babs while doing so.

Nice to see my Boy’s Roger and Pete show up, Just saw them on 11/9 in LA from the 5th row. Best money I have ever spent,

You just know Pete was saying to himself the whole night “Wankers to the left of me, Wankers to the right”

"Poor President Bush ?"

You've got to be kidding me ! If President Pollyanna doesn't have the balls to order her kept from the White House it's his own problem.....With all the crap she has spouted she could reasonably be considered a threat.

Typical Bush, trying to make friends with his enemies, but at least his inaction is only hurting himself this time.

Pete never smashed up good guitars. I never saw him smash up the Les Paul's he use to play.
I didn't know Kennedy Center honoured non US citizens. I'm a huge WHO fan, especially the original (Pete Townsend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon and John Entwhistle) members.

He’s played a lot of stuff. Though every time I see somebody trashing a guitar, I get a little sad inside. It’s a perfectly good instrument getting destroyed on stage.

I’ve been playing the same Stratocaster for 5 years, so I guess I’m a little biased.

Dunno about that, but he sure did smack up a lot of SG’s. Sure, they’re cheap as Gibsons go, but still not cheap.

But on that note, I only ever saw Kurt Cobain smash up Japanese Strats, never his Jaguar or Mustangs.

They don’t make US citizenship a requirement - I think they look for impact in the USA but not citizenship. The award has been given to Pavarotti, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and even Elton John:

As a guitarist myself, I don’t like watching anyone destroy their instruments either. To me, my guitars are part of my being.

Looking at your handle, by any chance are you an Iron Maiden fan?

I’ve always disliked the guitar-smashing thing, don’t know how any musician can do it. Apparently Pete Townshend and Jimi Hendrix fought over who would “get to do it” at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monterey_Pop_Festival

The Who

Although already a big act in the UK, and gaining some attention in the US, Monterey was the concert that propelled The Who into the American mainstream. The band’s famed performance was decided by a coin toss, since guitarists Pete Townshend and Jimi Hendrix each refused to go on after the other. The Who won, and went on to perform an explosive show which ended with the band destroying their instruments.

Jimi Hendrix

Hendrix, inspired by Pete Townshend’s guitar-smashing, ended his Monterey performance with an unpredictable version of “Wild Thing”, which he capped by kneeling over his guitar with playful reverence, pouring lighter fluid over it, setting it aflame, and then smashing it.[4] This produced unforeseen sounds and these actions contributed to his rising popularity in the USA [5]

I’ve got a book somewhere with a picture of Hendrix playing a white Strat with two large cracks in the body. It looks like the guitar was smashed and reassembled.
