Nicaragua asks U.S. for war reparations in aid row

MANAGUA (Reuters) - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, angry because the United States is rethinking an aid program, pressed Washington on Monday for billions of dollars in war reparations dating back to a 1980s civil war.

The International Court of Justice, based in the Hague, ordered the United States in 1986 to pay reparations to Nicaragua for training, arming and financing Contra rebels and mining Nicaraguan ports during a conflict that killed tens of thousands of people.

"The United States has not honored the judge's order," Ortega said on national television.

The World Court never set a figure for compensation but Sandinistas said Washington owed the country $17 billion. Washington at the time rejected the court's jurisdiction.

Ortega led a Marxist government during the war, which ended shortly after he was voted out of power in 1990. He bounced back to the presidency in 2006.

The U.S. government said last week it is reviewing a $175 million program of aid to Nicaragua because of concerns about recent elections in which Ortega's leftist Sandinista party won 105 of 146 municipal races. The opposition claimed the polls were rigged.

Obama will add them to the bailout. Recently Mick Jagger’s ex-wife Bianca from Nica was in court in NYC trying to keep her rent control apt she had for decades! Incredible!

The ICC can go —— itself. It has about as much right of standing here as we have of gaining standing by bringing charges against it.

As for Ortega, he should stick to making tortillas. Smirk...

Instead of reparations to Nicaragua they should just send one-million dollars to the Ortega residence in the form of a cruise missile. Heck, I am feeling really magnanimous; let’s send a few to the world court as well.

>> “The United States has not honored the judge’s order,” Ortega said on national television.

Judge Judy has more credibility than the “world court” judge. They can get in line starting 1/20/2009.

If I don’t do what an American court tells me to do, police officers will come to my home and drag me to jail. What actions does the “world court” plan to take if we fail to follow their verdict?

“The International Court of Justice, based in the Hague”

These clowns, whom we liberated from Nazi tyranny, and protected from Soviet tyranny for 60 years, pretend they have both legal and moral authority over us.

I like your Christmas spirit. Don’t forget Chavez, Morales, and Correa need Christmas presents too.

We need to spread the spirit of Christmas, as in a “missile spread.”

Now, that’s the Spirit of Christmas!

“Tis better to give than to receive”.

Send the bill to Ollie North. I’m certain he knows the appropriate response.

They will now: wasn't is Sandra Day O'Connor who said that American courts should take international law into consideration when deciding court cases?
I'm sure the POS-elect and his 'we are the world' attitude will make it happen.

I’d say go one better. Destabilize him from within. Make him so paranoid that he’ll be afraid to leave his compound. As far as this supposed “reparation” goes, he should pound sand.

I do not understand why our vaunted C.I.A. has failed to off Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro?
Course our military industrial complex needs boogie men out there or else we stop spending so much on defense.
