Ever wondered what a UAW contract looks like? Here is all 22 pounds of it (in this case, Ford’s 2,215 page 2007 master contract; Coke can is for scale and because I was thirsty).

I’ll tell you this much, those 2,215 pages don’t include much regarding efficiency and competitiveness. What you’ll find are hundreds of rules, regulations, and letters of understanding that have hamstrung the auto companies for years.

If you’d like to read the contracts for yourself, here they are:

"In the event the Plant Engineering Department decides it is unable to perform the work in question, the local union will be so advised and if the Union so requests, a meeting will be arranged by the Plant Industrial Relations Manager for the purpose of having advance discussion with the union as to the reasons why plant forces cannot perform the work. 3. In the event such advance discussion with the union results in the Company deciding it cannot perform any of the work or only part and the union concurs in this result, a memorandum concerning the results of the meeting will be prepared by the Company and a copy provided to the union. In addition to the written information outlined above, if part of the project is to be performed by Ford forces, that portion should be so identified in the memorandum. It was also agreed that the parties would urge the adoption of the above procedure in all locations where a mutually acceptable outside contracting clearance procedure does not now exist. In addition, it was agreed that in those locations...."

I use to work at a UAW plant. I couldn’t grab the mail and throw it on a colleagues or my secretary’s desk. ‘Cause that would be taking work away from a union employee. If I bought a fan at Wal-Mart ‘cause my office was too warm, I couldn’t plug it in ‘cause that was union electrician work. And I certainly couldn’t move my desk to get to the plug...that was reserved for union laborer classifications.

The suits at Corp HQ recently arranged for some union electricians from a sister plant to spend a week, and share and learn. By Tuesday afternoon, they’d already refused work that was beneath them. “We’re journeymen. We refuse such drudgery. Get yourself an apprentice to check individual connections in cabinet terminal strips.” By Wednesday morning, the Int’l Brotherhood of Electrical non-Workers had flown back to their job-banked, feather-bedded North-Central Shangri-La.

Oh, good. I was looking for some light, holiday reading.

I was going to go out and buy James Patterson's new book, "Cross Country", but this will do.

Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but it says you get paid 100% of your salary if you are let go (for up to 2 years) if you come in and do BS work. If you just don’t feel like coming in you get 85% of your salary.

Also- You can just not show up for 4 days at a time with no reason and theres nothing they can do to you. Only when it hits 5 days can they write you up and then you can still go get a “doctors note” after the fact-then all is ok.

Add to that the 3 foot tall pile of government, OSHA, enviromental, etc. regulations.
We have become a joke.
Why even bother anymore?
