New taxes, deep cuts to education and health care, and a restructuring of the state's economic development programs will be hallmarks of Gov. David Paterson's first budget plan to be released in two days, according to interviews of people briefed on components.
The plan will come with a host of revenue raisers — increased taxes on hospitals and insurance policies, for instance — and at least one new assessment, a so-called obesity tax on non-diet soda to raise $404 million. The governor also is contemplating requiring new license plates to raise cash, reviving sales tax on clothing purchases, removing the tax cap on gasoline and threatening to require Indian retailers to collect taxes on sales to non-Indians by signing into law a bill passed

Higher taxes on hospitals, doctors, and insurance? That’s going to go over big. I thought the Democrat mantra was to pretend to reduce the cost of health care.
More B.S.. These guys STILL don’t get it. Cut spending - drastically. Education could be cut by at least 15%. The return on the investment sucks. Record spending, dismal performance. Cut all the boondoggle projects until the economy turns around. No stadiums, civic centers, etc. Institute a mandatory one year residency requirement for any public assistance.

Actually, they do get it.
Their power comes from the votes of the looter class, which will not be touched directly by the tax increases. However, ANY cuts in the gimme programs results in loss of power for the elected officials doing the cutting.
What has really happened in this God forsaken state is that the welfare and looter class and the public service unions have become so large in numbers that they effectively control the state.
There is NO WAY to fix NY. This place is and has been thoroughly screwed. 12 years of Uncle Mario sent this State on an irreversible downhill slide from which it can not recover.

Call me a dreamer. I keep hoping the people that actually pay the bills will vote the bums out. Sadly, I fear you are right - there are more "takers" than there are "producers."
So what's a "producer" to do? Cash out and head to a more prudent state like South Carolina?

Sure. You want to buy my house so I can leave? It sits out here in Wayne County, home of the highest property tax rates in the entire United States.
I am stuck here. Unless I walk away from a mortgage and skip out on my obligations I can not leave.
(Of course, once it gets to the point where I can’t find any work, I will end up defaulting eventually once I go broke. Then I can leave.)

A 1 year residency law was tried under the Rockefeller admin. A family moved into the state about 1 week after the law was passed, applied for welfare, and was turned down. They went to legal aid, got a free lawyer, and went to a Federal court. The Federal judge ruled that “you cannot deny these people the RIGHT to live wherever they want to”. The law was ruled unconstitutional, and struck down. What New York should do is to pass a law that If you come into the state and need welfare, you get it for 3 months. After that time you are expected to: have a job, or move in with relatives, or leave the state. The prospects of this law passing are slim and none, and slim just left the building. The politicians pander to the poor because they are guaranteed votes as long as the “goodies” keep coming.
And so it begins. They can’t make enough on smokers any longer so now they will go after red meat and exchange of body fluids. I must have read about this before./s

I know how you feel. I'm trying to make it to retirement eligibility at what used to be the major employer in town and is now a shadow of its former self. The big jump that comes at 30 years, means when you're close the only prudent choice is to ride the roller coaster, no matter how bumpy it gets.

I hear you. But given the financial realities in our nation, I doubt conventional retirement will ever be an option. I would like to have saved enough where I can have some choice in work environment. Not to mention a choice of location, where my neighbors are more prudent.

Now do you understand why I am *against* a sales tax and all excise taxes? They encourage such nannyisms.
no mention of cutting teachers salaries or their precious benefits and retirements....we wouldn't want to upset the teachers union....
instead, we'll make more hospitals close, more nursing homes close, have less home care and charge everybody more for health insurance, which isn't the govt workers nor the NYS retirees, at least not for family members I know....
the Detroit legacy costs pale in comparison to civil service....it is totally not sustainable...

Instead of tipping point, maybe it should be the tapping point - as in all tapped out, and you're screwed.
Well, yes, pretend is the operative word. They really want to make health insurance and care unaffordable so that people will clamor for a government system. I believe Ted Kennedy said as much several years ago - that they would get socialized medicine in increments. Looks like they will succeed.
All compounded by Global Warming, meaning you won't even have the option of sticking Granny on an ice floe any more.
