Lessons From '92 Offer Hope to GOP
By GERALD F. SEIB
A young and popular Democratic president is preparing to take over the White House, while a lame-duck Republican named Bush heads for the exits. Slumping Republicans are in despair; they've seen Democrats win majorities of almost 80 seats in the House and 15 in the Senate.
A snapshot of today's political landscape? Yes. But it's also a precise description of the predicament Republicans faced at the end of 1992, when Bill Clinton, not Barack Obama, was preparing to take over the presidency.
As low as the GOP was after that 1992 election, within two years it had roared back to take control of the House for the first time in half a century. The point is simple: Tattered as Republicans look today, it's easy to forget that they've been here before, and not so long ago, and recovered fairly quickly.

One who remembers it well is Haley Barbour, the current governor of Mississippi, who had either the great fortune or misfortune (it wasn't clear at the time which it was) of taking over as Republican National Committee chairman at the dawn of the Clinton presidency.
Having seen this play before, Gov. Barbour knows it needn't have an unhappy ending for his party. The script he followed at the time, in fact, may be illuminating for his party today.

Ain't that the truth? Probably our best hope is for Osama's constituencies to spend so much energy fighting each other for a dwindling tax pie that big government is neutered somewhat.
If you examine “democracies” worldwide, aren’t 80 percent of them on the “left” most of the time? The people worldwide want what Lenin promised them but failed to deliver.
It was their ideas and sellouts that gave the tax payers those wonderful Credit default Swaps and hedge funds!!! You need to look up how much they received on those deals.
“In the 1992 national elections, the Coalition distributed 40 million voter guides. Forty-one percent of the congressional candidates who received a 100% rating from the Coalition’s voter guide won.”
(That’s the Christian Coalition and Pat Robertson)

Do you have link to that. I can’t believe even in 1909 the tines could have written something sensible like that.
There will be some in-fighting. And a clever Republican Party could leverage that to help keep the country afloat.
But we do not have a clever Republican Party.
We have an Extremely Stupid Republican Party (with some notable exceptions).
Yes, in order for the GOP to survive, we must bring more Latino voters to our side. Nothing matters more.
[within two years it had roared back.....]
Conservatism. Wins every time it’s tried.
“Latinos can be GOP we just have to sell them the brand.”
And if the price is amnesty and no border security?
And if the price is amnesty and no border security?
the sales pitch has to convince them that their interest is a secure border and economic growth for legal americans under a reaganesque economic model.
I don’t see that being successful. Also, In most cases that these people have a vote in their home countries, they vote overwhelmingly for socialists and communists. Why would that be any different just because they move to the U.S.?
For every new GOP Hispanic voter, there are three new Democrats.
You cannot lose on every sale, and make it up on volume.
We already have one anti-white party, we don't need two.
I am thinking about 2nd generation latinos not illegal aliens.
OK, then how do you handle demographic realities (shrinking “white” population, growing secularization of the white population, etc.) by just being the party of white professing Christians? How do you win elections?
Again: How, pray tell, do we win national elections if we are seen as the party of rural, white fundamentalist christians? We are losing SUBURBIA from Reagan’s sake!
Combatting white self-hatred.
McCain got 55% of the white vote, and whites still represent a HUGE majority of all voters.
Increasing Presidential total white vote to a winning total is a small problem. Turning white haters into reliable GOP voters is a huge, likely insurmountable problem.
I get where you are coming from Jim, but those are the Demos that cost us the election. Even if we deported every illegal tomorrow, certain cultural and demograpic trends among the white population alone are causing problems for the GOP election wise.
