Just saw two of the passengers on tv. They spoke with flawless American accents, apparently having been born here. (Not that that means anything when it comes to terrorism.)

Anyway, according to them, passengers overheard them talking about where was the safest place to sit - on the wing or in the back. The passengers told airline personnel, they were taken off the plane, and not allowed to reboard. According to the two, air marshalls were much nicer than the airline personnel, and cleared them for later travel, but the airline wouldn't take them as passengers due to ongoing security concerns.

They were travelling with wives and young children.

He said five of the six adults in the party are of South Asian descent, and all six are traditionally Muslim in appearance, with the men wearing beards and the women in headscarves. Irfan, 34, is an anesthesiologist. His brother, 29, is a lawyer. Both live in Alexandria with their families, and both were born in Detroit.

These two men were born in Detroit, raised in a American culture, yet still are wearing traditionally Muslim clothing and beards ? Lot's of American Muslim convert that wear everyday normal clothes like millions of Americans

Misunderstanding my ass

May I ask how HIGH up the plane was when they were ‘ordered out’??
I would think several thousand feet would be enough.

Actually, the only way to make sure no more ‘misunderstandings’ occur re. death-cultists on planes would be to NOT ALLOW Muslims on planes at all! Problem solved.

Did anyone in this country defend the right to be a Nazi in the US during WW2 when Nazism threatened the world?
Why the hell do we defend the right to be a Muslim when Islam is at war with the world?

In their formative years, nearly all Ivy Leaguers would have benefited mightily from a summer of washing dishes at a diner, working as a low-level construction site laborer, or stocking shelves in a grocery store.

Such experience would do them worlds more good than sitting at the knee of a dozen “prestigious”, wholly clueless, tenured wastes of space.

“’Safety’ Remark Gets Muslim Family Kicked Off Plane”
Friday, January 02, 2009

MyFOXDC.com

WASHINGTON —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An unnamed source told MyFOXDC.com that they overheard one member of the family talking about the safest place to sit on a plane if a bomb was on board, though the family denied the word “bomb” was ever used.

“We’re very careful about what we even say on the plane,” Atif Irfan, who was kicked off the flight, told MyFOXDC.com. “Even if we were to say that’s the bomb, we wouldn’t even say that on the plane because we know to avoid certain buzz words, and we’re very careful about this kind of stuff so, I don’t know where they would have thought this whole incident even started from, quite frankly, what words we used.””

Doesn't mean a thing. They were traveling in "go to haj" clothes, talking about "safest place to sit", etc.

Had it occurred to you that airline folks have gotten terribly paranoic about that sort of thing in recent years?

I know I'm super aware of such things when I travel by air, so they're probably moreso.

I’m also super aware. I claim no extraordinary courage (or stupidity ;) ) there.

However, I think I would trust the marshals and FBI if they said these folks were clear to travel after examining their persons, their carryons, and their checked luggage. And top that off with wives and kids.

Yeah, you never hear about Muslim men sacrificing women and children or placing them in harm’s way.

The FBI looked at everything - in totality - and said they could fly. All the pieces added up to "not terrrorists."

This seems to be a distinctly miority position in here, but I think tht AirTran crewed up big time on this one and deserves every bit of teh legal reaming it is about to get.

Okay, a passenger overhears something suspicious. The FBI is called in, does some checking and, finding no danger, recommends that the family be free to travel on. But never underestimate the power of airlines to be heartless bastards. They not only refused the investigating officers' recommendation, but refused to let the family fly again FOREVER. I understand that AirTran has had to backpedal on this last bit since the incident.

Well, according to some of the folks here, the guys on tv sounded like two idiots, which goes to show you how they let their biases cloud their judgment. The two I saw interviewed at length - a physician and an attorney, were both very pleasant and quite well spoken, aside from the fact that they appeared a bit nervous.

I can honestly say that when I board a plane, I look around to see who I'm boarding with, and I wouldn't hestitate to speak up if I heard or saw something suspicious. I'm not naive, but I'm also not for throwing away our civil rights. If you can deny civil rights to two generations of Americans born here, then we are all at risk. I especially appreciated the fact that they went out of their way to say that the FBI was very professional and treated them well.

I also don't have the hatred for every Muslim that many freepers have. I live in a large urban area, my kids go to school with a few Muslims, and some of our neighbors are Muslim, etc.

Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.
