Charleston, SC - Leaders of the Latino community are pushing for a massive change to the immigration reform system. They want to see an end to deportation that leaves families in disarray. At the same time, a new law in South Carolina is creating tension for illegal immigrants.
They came to the U.S. in search of a better life. They were looking for a chance to make a living and to provide for families here and back home. Some of these people are legal U.S. citizens, others are here illegally and their future is uncertain.
We are hoping we can see a change where they become legal to our system and stay with their families and stop separation and deportation, said Diana Salazar, President of the Charleston Latino Association.
Undocumented workers have been the target of Homeland Security raids across the country. Efrin Salvia, an illegal worker, worries he could be next.
We are just families that come to work. We dont come to take money away from anyone, just to work and have a better life, said Salvia.
The undocumented workers in South Carolina face an even more pressing matter. Its a new immigration law that went into effect January 1st. The measure demands employers to verify citizenship on all new hires. If a business is found in violation, the company will face a fine and the employee must be fired.
The only thing that can happen is I can end up losing my house, maybe I might leave this country and my children go to a country they dont know of, said Salvia.
Today, an effort to keep that from happening. Leaders and activists in the Latino community are taking testimony in hopes their words will lead to sweeping reform. They want to give families the chance to legalize their citizenship without the risk of deportation, putting parents and children on the opposite sides of the border.
The Latino community is calling on President Elect Barack Obama to put a stop to immigration raids within the first 90 days of office, until the government can reform its immigration policy.
South Carolina ping!
Then follow the law like my parents (and counntless millions of other legal immigrants) did!
Nothing about wanting to become a U.S. citizen. They just want to "work" and have "a better life." I don't know why the Commie 'RATS are trying to force them into becoming U.S. citizens. That's not what they want!!!
“An illegal alien OWNS A HOUSE in the United States?! WTF?!!”
Thank Jorge and the Dems before him. Pushing to give illegal aliens mortgages is what caused our housing and economic crisis.

They came here illegally so it makes the crminals. Go back to your own country and figure out what to do there.
Get them the hell out of my country.
After perpetuating the conditions in your native cesspool, you want to legalize your status - not citizenship by a long shot - you interloping sonsofbitches? Try following the one thing we have that your dung sluice of a birthplace doesn't - LAWS!!!!!
We should never leave parents and children on opposite sides of the border. When the parents are deported, the children should be too. It’s only right.
The solution here is simple. Deport the whole family.
Then do it legally, like my ancestors did. Or do you think you are better than everybody else?
Hey, that is a coincidence so does America.
Many hardworking Mexicans have crossed the border. The real problem is the Mexican criminals came right along with them, bringing drugs, crimes of rape, murder, theft, etc. They since have formed Latino gangs which are spreading all over the country. Like Carter gave amnesty to all the Vietnam war dodgers, Obama may end up doing the same for the illegals. Then they arent illegal anymore
Absolute bull!! Here in the mountains of Western NC construction and service buisnesses are what the economy is all about. These are small family owned buisnesses in which the illegals worm their way in with fake papers. These small buisnesses don't have the resources to check if the papers are forged.
After these illegals learn the ropes, they quit the family that hired them, start their own buisness, and offer much lower prices for their work. I have many American friends here that are having a hard time feeding their families due to the illegals 'taking the jobs Americans don't want'.
Why is it I don't feel sympathy for these SOBs!
Huh? e-Verify is free for any employer.
Oh boo hoo hoo. They have melted my cold cold heart. I propose we give Efrin Salvia Shawn Smetana’s job at ten cents on the dollar.
I can’t believe the libs have infiltrated even the most conservative state in the Union, SC, with their biased reporting.
I don't think these rednecks know what that is.
Let me correct myself. Most of the Mexicans hired here are legal. The legal Mexicans start their own buisness (after learning the ropes) and then get their illegal friends to work it. The legals know they can hire their illegal friends for slave pay thereby able to undercut quotes of the folks that grew up here. BTW I have yet to see the state of NC go after a Mexican buisness. Lots of Dems in power and they need their votes.
