Barack Obama, who takes over as U.S. president from George W. Bush on January 20, broke his silence about the violence in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, calling the loss of civilian lives in Gaza and in Israel a "source of deep concern for me."
Obama added he would adhere to his principle that only Bush should be the voice of U.S. foreign policy at this time but he would have plenty to say after his inauguration in two weeks.
Nonetheless, Obama said that he is "not backing at all from what I've said during the campaign we're going to engage effectively and consistently in the peace process."
"We've got plenty to say about Gaza, and on January 20, you'll hear directly from me," he added.
Meanwhile, the United States on Tuesday signaled some flexibility over Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip, saying it would like to see "an immediate ceasefire" but emphasizing any such agreement must be durable, sustainable and indefinite.
U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack also said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's trip to the United Nations on Tuesday was designed to show that the United States was open a variety of ways to achieve a cease-fire. "We would like an immediate cease-fire, absolutely," McCormack told reporters, speaking after Israeli tank shells killed at least 40 Palestinians at a United Nations school where civilians had taken shelter. "An immediate cease-fire that is durable, sustainable and not time-limited."

SAY? talk is cheap. All Obama has ever done is talk. What matters is what a President DOES.
No doubt in my mind this can be accomplished. After all the Muslims are dead.
Not me. I hope they take their time and kill off all Hamas assets. Besides, I want to hear what the Big O has to say, while the heat is on.
Only if his policy will be different than the current Bush policy. Otherwise, he should say he sypports the CURRENT President.
So profound.
LOL!!
You guys are a HOOT!
ROFLMAO!!!!!
Only problem is, there is no peace process when it comes to Hamas. Their objective is consistent, clear and non-negotiable.
WELL SAID!!!!
yOU nailed it...he just doesn’t want to be bothered during his photo ops...I’m waiting for him to do the state of The Union without his shirt on!
ROFLMAO!!

Bravery Incarnate.
Pretty F’n Lame.
I think Hussein’s decision will come down to siding with whatever side/entity offers the bigge$t payoff. It’s how he rolls.
“’I hope Israel is finishing up by then.’
Wonder if Israel’s timing has anything to do with the president-elect.......”
Good thought.
THERE is no Israeli threat!! How does this affect us? We need to stop policing the world!
Time to throw it back at the left.
I agree!
The majority of Americans support Israel against the muslim terrorists in Gaza. If Obama supported Israel, and the stance of the Bush Gov in this, he would say so immediately: to associate his own position with that of the voters if nothing else.
I think Obama is exactly as bad and twisted as his “past” associations and accomplishments plainly illustrate. He is silent for a reason.
I predict that Obama will act against Israel soon after he is sworn in. Perhaps this is what Biden was talking about.
