Bennett: Send Moseley Braun to Senate, Not Burris @ 5:02 pm by Hill Staff

Sen. Robert Bennett (Utah), the top Republican on the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, suggested Tuesday that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) should instead appoint former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D) to the upper chamber instead of Roland Burris.

"She's non-controversial, she has been here, she's an African-American, she clearly has not been picked by the governor, and she would be appointed by virtue of her past history," said Bennett, whose committee may soon consider Burris's Senate appointment.

"Everyone would accept her," Bennett said. "If she wanted to compete in the special election, she could. If Burris wanted to compete in the special election, he could."

But the Republican added, "No one will listen to the idea and I don't expect anything to come of it."

Bennett may be overestimating Moseley Braun's ability to avoid controversy. Republicans, during her past elections and during her 1999 confirmation hearing to become ambassador to New Zealand, criticized her 1996 meeting with Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and noted that her 1992 campaign faced accusations of sloppy bookkeeping.

All they would have to do is get Burris to resign the seat that is already his.

More importantly, why can’t we have elected officials who actually respect the constitution? Vacancies are not filled by the Senate but by the executive authority of the state.

I was moving into a new apartment when I heard church bells tolling throughout the city. Turned out that Da Mare had died. One of the moments (like JFK’s assassination) that I will never forget. He was quite a character for good and ill.

I don’t know what it’s like living in the city now because I have been in the burbs for almost 20 years. City traffic is horrendous, and we have little tolerance for libbie yuppies, so we stay away.

Chicago was always a friendly town, even with the crime and the corruption. As a Midwesterner, I am biased in that regard. I rarely enjoyed my experiences in the South or the two Coasts. The more time I spent in those areas, the more I dislked them. No offense intended to other Freepers.

OMG... I can’t believe this isn’t satire. Bennett can’t be for real.

I FReeped her once in Richmond. Had a big sign listing some of her highlights in office. The only one I remember right now is her escapade with the Nigerian Toy Boy.

The Dims were peering at the sign through the curtains throughout their meeting with her. Most gratifying.

Is this guy getting senile?!

It can’t a be joke. It would be too funny of one for Bennett to think of.

Yes. Retire old man.

And I hope Matheson takes a losing run for his eat.

I’d be tempted if I was a GOP Senator to savage Burris. But we want him to run for reelection.

They should be quiet and let the ruling party deal with their little mess.

Bennett’s father, who was also a Senator, lived well into his 90s. Bob might be thinking of serving until he’s carried out feet-first. But his comment certainly sounds like the mark of senility.
