Despite deep chill, global warming is still a peril: scientists

PARIS (AFP) – A cold front is sweeping across Europe after gripping swathes of North America last month, but the deep freeze does not mean the threat of global warming has abated, caution scientists.

"The major trend is unmistakably one of warming," Michel Jarraud, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), told AFP.

"If we look at the trajectory over the last 160 years, it overlays a large natural variability, and that's what causes confusion."

The cooler weather that was a hallmark of 2008 can be explained partly by La Nina, a reversal of the phenomenon by which warm waters build up on the surface of the Pacific, said Jarraud.

"The problem is that people are confusing weather with climate," Susan Solomon, a top scientist on the UN's Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), said in a recent interview.

"Weather is important locally, and from year to year. But what you really have to look at when you are interested in climate is the larger scale -- the whole world -- and the longer term," she said.

Even if 2008 was on balance chillier than 2007, it still ranks as the 10th warmest year on record, she pointed out.

And over the long haul, average global surface temperatures have climbed significantly -- between 0.75 and 1.0 degrees Celsius (1.35 and 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) -- since 1850, when accurate weather statistics were first recorded.

Total BS, our local weatherman showed the avg. temps since 1998, it's a clear downward trend.

There is NO such thing as Climate Science.

If there were, scientists could accurately predict the future climate. They can't. Scientists are working to develop a Climate Science, but they have a century or so to go before they will know if it is even possible to hope for a real Climate Science some day. Think Fusion as a source of economical power as an example.

Hot = Global Warming

Cold = Global Warming

Nice to have it both ways.

My college commie daughter has switched her tune.

Rather than admit global warming is a hoax, she now says it is "the rate of climate change" that should worry us.

Even if it is, the odds are better than not that the “climate” change is due to non-human agency: sunspots, ocean current movements, etc. The same factors which generated an ice age, and put hippopotamuses in the Thames River.

“If we look at the trajectory over the last 160 years, it overlays a large natural variability, and that’s what causes confusion.”

Whats causing confusion is looking at the last 160 years and ignoring the last 160,000 years.

Yep.....that’s how liberals reason....if you can call it “reason”.....Global Warming has become a kind of religion, the worship of the earth....a return to pantheism....more heat equals global warming....more cold equals global warming.

Kind of neat...eh?

Gasp, this clown would never get past a good advanced stats class.

Perhaps he might like to look at the trajectory for a slightly longer time. Hint, he might try to include the last great warming (which we all know was much warmer than anything these clowns are predicting).

"The major trend is unmistakably one of warming," Michel Jarraud, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), told AFP.

These folks remind me of astronomers in the time of Galileo. As new evidence came in that showed that the earth revolved around the sun, they nonetheless made up reasons so that the peasants would continue to believe the earth was the center of the universe and persecuted any who would challenge their "knowledge."

The same is happening today. Global warming advocates refuse to look at new data and form independent conclusions, instead relying on original IPCC work, much of which was written by non-scientists with other agendas. BTW, some of the data being used to continue to support the global warming scenario has been proven to be inaccurate but used anyway by NASA and NOAA in support of their one-world big government agenda.

Yeah, yeah. If it's hot, it's global warming. If it's cold, it's the weather.

Susan Soloman received the Blue Planet Award from the Asahi Glass Corporation. It includes a 50 million yen prize, which works out to more than half a million dollars. Poor underfunded, research scientist. Of course, she's not tainted by taking corporate money. Nooo. Only skeptics are capable of being tainted.
