LAS VEGAS Microsoft Corp.'s next version of the Windows operating system is almost ready for prime time. That's one message Chief Executive Steve Ballmer delivered on the eve of the official opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Is this like Win2000 that was announced for years and then release as a $700 SERVER?
Will it be as good as VISTA?
Will vista owners get a rebate toward a new purchase id they can prove they are not happy? (i.e. if they can prove they own VISTA)
None of the above.
As much as I agree with you and would also like to upgrade to 7 from vista on my laptop, Microsoft is not dumb and will not lose money in this process I can guarantee it!
I hope Dell starts selling XP again!
Windows 2000 was originally supposed to be NT5. It was the most solid release ever.
Vista sucks worse than Windows Me.
Yeah right! C'mon, this stuff is supposed to be believable. How you going to out-do Vista?
Ha! Get real dude!
Do I need s\?
They still do.
Agreed. Vista is worse than ME.
Does anyone know if Windows 7 will run 16-bit applications. I heard that it will. Vista Home (32-bit) can run them but Vista 64 cannot. Vista is awful.
i thought they had stopped that. Noone wanted Vista.
By all reports Windows 7 is a very very good OS, of course the appleites will never acknowledge this or the light weight smart asses who think it is cool to dump on something because a certain company that touched them in forbidden places made it. I personally can’t wait. It is supposed to be less resource grubbing, has the fastest boot time of any OS made, plus a lot of other little improvements and new things added.
Disagree. ME was a buggy crashing POS. Vista rarely crashes and anybody who says so doesn’t know squat about Vista. The only thing the two have in common is that they are both OS’s meant to bridge the gap between OS generations.
Just the 200 million people who purchased Vista either seperately or built into their machine, otherwise you are right no-one wanted it.
So, I haven’t read anything about this...but is this something that is layed on top of Vista or a completely new OS?
I have been running XP Pro for several years. The OS does everything I need to have done and I see no reason to change! I will look at MS7 and in a couple of years if it works out I will leapfrog Vista. I wouldn’t touch Vista, EVER!
My uncle swears by ME and uses it to this day. He says it’s the best thing Microsoft has ever done. Everybody in our family thinks he’s a bit “off”. Personally I went directly from 98 to XP, so don’t have any experience with ME.
Can everyone tell me what is a good virus protection that is good that isn’t expensive. Husband lost his job and don’t have a lot of money. I thought republicans were suppose to be rich!
AVAST
I’ve been putting off getting a new desktop because I don’t want Vista. Windows 7, however, is getting great reviews because it fixed one of Vista’s biggest pains — the use of resources. Windows 7 supposedly loads and installs much faster even on slower systems, has an improved User Account configuration tool, works more with Bluetooth and USB devices.
It’s out in Beta now and they’re expecting the full release late this year. I can wait that long and it sounds VERY promising. If it works as well as they claim, I’ll strip Vista from my daughter’s laptop an install 7.
