In December, I was asked to file a second report on an automobile accident that took place back in September, during a visit to Los Angeles. A truck slammed into my car from behind while I was stopped at a traffic light.
As I sat down to write a new report, I tried to recall the details, beginning with where the accident took place, which I remembered as having been on Wilshire Boulevard.
Fortunately, I had saved a copy of my first report on this same accident, which showed that it took place on Santa Monica Boulevard, not Wilshire, which was the street up ahead.
What if I had not saved a copy of that first report, and had written down and signed a report saying that the accident took place on Wilshire Boulevard, when everyone else involved said it was on Santa Monica Boulevard? If this was a statement made under oath, I could have been prosecuted for perjury.
All this made me think back to a more important case where memories differed and a man's life was ruined because of a perjury conviction. Moreover, it was about something that was no more crucial than the name of the street where an accident took place.
That man was Lewis ("Scooter") Libby, assistant to Vice-President Dick Cheney. He testified under oath that he had not leaked to reporters the information that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA, but had in fact learned about it himself from reporters, including Tim Russert.
Unfortunately for Scooter Libby, there was testimony from Tim Russert that he himself did not know that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA at the time of his conversation with Libby.

Sure, pardon Libby right after you pardon Ramos and Compean.
Bush is more likely to pardon Bill Ayers.
Since Armitage admitted on day one of the investigation that it was he that had leaked her name, and since the CIA confirmed her employment over the phone to Novak (and I don’t think anyone can argue that the CIA is in the habit of outing their undercover agents over the phone), I have to ask what was Fitz investigating between the time he knew it was Armitage and the time he decided to hang Libby. Just what was he investigating all that time.
Fitz is a disgrace. The fact that he’s going after Blagojevich doesn’t change the fact that he is a disgrace.

After a few long days of grilling like that, I don't think anyone could survive a perjury conviction. When they're out to get you, they get you.
Libby definitely deserves a pardon.
Fitz does seem to be a disgrace, and it may not be a ‘fact’ that he is going after Blagojevich. The supposed surveillance tapes may be the equivalent of Craig Livingston's FBI files. They may suggest a variant of “pay-to-play” along the line of “pay-to-stay”. That Fitz could be paid by our justice department to disable a very capable man, Scooter Libby, for two years, crippling his career and condemning him to some years in prison for a crime Fitz knew he didn't commit raises the question of why Fitz has not been charged? This is not about justice but about vicious political power plays, and I don't see how Fitz is on the side of truth and protection of The Constitution, which he swore to uphold and protect. Fie on G.W. Bush if he doesn't correct the misdeed. One must wonder what his enemies have on him.

This whole thing was an outrageous miscarriage of justice. The person who should have been prosecuted was the special prosecutor who knew almost from day one that: 1) there had been no law broken because the stupid twit Phlame was not an undercover agent, and 2) that Armitage was the leaker. Another governmental screw up.
I still have a lot of faith in President Bush and I have a feeling that he will pardon all three of them before he leaves office. Recall that a number of Clinton’s pardons were actually signed on January 19, so President Bush still has plenty of time left to do so.
I think Scooters dad donated once to the Repbulican party so Bush won’t pardon him.
