Al Qaeda Pakistan Chief 'Is Dead'

11:42am UK, Friday January 09, 2009 The head of operations for al Qaeda in Pakistan and his lieutenant are believed to be dead, a US counter-terrorism official has said.

The militant group's operations chief Usama al Kini was thought to be responsible for high-profile terrorist attacks.

They included the Marriott hotel bombing in Islamabad that killed 55 people in September and an unsuccessful attempt to kill Benazir Bhutto.

The former Pakistani Prime Minister was later assassinated in a separate attack.

"These deaths are a significant near-term degradation of al Qaeda's leadership," the unnamed official said.

Sky News' Asia correspondent Alex Crawford said if the report is true it will be a blow to the terrorist network operating in Pakistan and "a significant fillip to the Americans".

She added: "However, it is difficult if not impossible to verify the claims."

They follow increasing confidence in the Bush administration that al Qaeda's central command structure has been significantly weakened.

Kini and his dead lieutenant, Sheikh Ahmed Salim Swedan, were both Kenyan-born.

They were on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorism suspects and had been indicted for the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.

They were also believed to have trained operatives to travel to the United States and Europe.

Yep-good news for sure...I hope they all are taking dirt naps very soon...justice for my classmates and the alumni from Manhattan College who died on 9-11...six pages of obituaries all dated 9-11 on the next Alumni newsletter. In one case the entire family was wiped out Grand-dad, son and grandson.

It says, “BELIEVED TO BE dead.” I believed in a lot things as a kid that I later found out were not true, so I grew up to be a hopeful skeptic.

I want the ruby slippers. Bring me his ruby slippers. Then I’ll believe it.

Fillip: 1 a: a blow or gesture made by the sudden forcible straightening of a finger curled up against the thumb b: a short sharp blow.

Hey...that's what dad used to do to my brother and me when we were being stupid...we used to call them knuckle thumps.

That’s the verb form.... The Brits tend to use it as “a significant and often unexpected development.”
