Economy, Jobs Trump All Other Policy Priorities In 2009 (Global warming is last of 20 priorities!)

As Barack Obama takes office, the public’s focus is overwhelmingly on domestic policy concerns – particularly the economy. Strengthening the nation’s economy and improving the job situation stand at the top of the public’s list of domestic priorities for 2009. Meanwhile, the priority placed on issues such as the environment, crime, illegal immigration and even reducing health care costs has fallen off from a year ago.

While it is not unusual for the public to prioritize domestic over foreign policy, the balance of opinion today is particularly one-sided. Roughly seven-in-ten Americans (71%) say that President Obama should focus on domestic policy, while just 11% prioritize foreign policy. By comparison, last January, 56% cited domestic policy as most important while 31% said Bush should focus on foreign policy...

Moral decline, tax cuts and immigration aren’t all that popular, either.

We are going to be ok :) He has promised the folks that build our bridges, and other things you hope are built right, by minorities. No more white professional males! Eventually that might apply to other professionals as well. Imagine your wife or daughter’s surgeon’s qualifications being a non- white, non- professional, plus an affirmative action medical degree.

No more white professional males!

That would mean a lot of white males with loads of guns and nothing to do...

Our goobermint’s solution will involve applying a used dirty band-aid to a severed jugular. Then they’ll take a break for coffee, a bagel, a 30 minute workout, a nap, some sex, cocktails, dinner, sleep, breakfast, then a vacation, then show up to make a vote, then swing by the office, then call a press conference.....etc. After that, they stroll by the body laying on the floor where they left it and wonder what happened.

Well, the point of the thread was that chasing global warming doesn't lead anywhere.

I know that’s the point of the thread, but if we’re going to take the poll seriously, we can’t pick and choose.

By far, the absolute best article I've read to date on the economy was just written in the Winter addition of the City Journal by Nicole Gelinas. You really don't have to be an economics major to understand just what is taking place. I highly recommend it.

LOL, I agree with you in a small measure. But, in my opinion, white males capitulated a long, long time ago. Besides, do you really think you will have an unlimited supply of black powder? Think of the sieges in the Bible. A few thousand men cannot stand individually, almost defenseless. As much as I would like to believe it, strategically, I can’t comprehend it.

I look at those items low down on the list as meaning that people don’t want the government to do anythng about them. So not doing anything about immigration is better than amnesty. Not doing anything about taxes is better than raising them. And not doing anything about Global warming way better than the government doing something about it. As for moral decline, that aint for the government do anything about either in my opinion. Thats up to us within our communities.

Can the Feds Uncrunch Credit? - Maybe—but Washington’s unprecedented interventions could make things much, much worse.

Thank you.

Green jobs making alternative fuels because of anthropogenic global warming was supposed to be a large part of Obams's "jolt" to get the economy going? IIRC, the economy was priority# 1. How is overpriced alternative fuels going to help the economy? Biofuels are not economic now. Solar and wind haven't developed a storage capability and require conventionally powered backup.

I actually knew a person a few years ago, very leftist, who lived in a house with solar power, and she would jump all over these Green folks and say "It's not there yet, we still have to rely on fossil fuels." It was rather funny watching her fellow libs thinking they know it all talking to her about what was possibly while she waited, waited, and then gave them chapter and verse about the facts, and how their house was backed up with traditional power sources.

Obama seems to think he can just WILL this stuff into catching up with the desire for it. I'm all for alternative fuels, it will cut our connections to other countries (not just the Middle East, which isn't even our number one source), but I also deal in reality, unlike Obama.

I'm all for alternative fuels...

I have nothing against unsubsidized alternative fuels. I want cheap energy and energy independence if possible. Our current account deficit is huge in large part from buying foreign fuel.

Top Three: “Economy, Jobs, Terrorism”.

Republicans should get the message and focus on these — stand against Obama’s destructive policies and go to the American people with THEIR positive agenda, such as tax cuts, reduced spending, and strong stand against terrorism. They should start NOW, so when the Dem agenda fails, the Republicans would have a chance in 2010.

“Moral decline, tax cuts and immigration aren’t all that popular, either.”

The poll seems to have taken large issues and mixed in issues which are subsets of the larger issues.

But Economy, Jobs and Terrorism are the top three. Jobs should really be part of economy, as well as tax cuts.

Republicans need to explain to people that tax cuts and immigration have a major impact on economy.
