Summit proposed to mobilize volunteers nationwide in face of economic crisis (Knights of Columbus)

The leader of the world's largest Catholic lay organization is calling for a national summit next month to mobilize volunteers and coordinate a response to the worst economic crisis in decades.

The proposal by Carl Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus, comes as the poor economy is hurting nonprofits while the organizations face growing demand for food, clothing, shelter and job and mental health counseling.

"This is a defining moment really for the country," Anderson said Friday in an interview.

Anderson proposed the summit of religious and secular charitable and volunteer organizations on Feb. 27 in New York City in a speech Friday at Fairfield University.

He's inviting dozens of charities, including the Salvation Army and Goodwill, to participate.

"If greed, one of the worst aspects of human nature, helped push us into this crisis, then one of the best aspects of human nature, generosity, will be necessary to help pull us out," Anderson said in the speech. "Let us work to make that spirit of volunteerism the hallmark of our nation's recovery."

The appeal for volunteers echoes a call by President Barack Obama, a former community organizer who has been emphasizing volunteerism. Speaking just days after the National Day of Service on Monday, Anderson called for Americans to make 2009 "the year of the volunteer."

"Government and charities must work together for the good of our country, and in difficult economic times, that means creating opportunities for Americans to give of their time and talent, as well as their treasure" Anderson said.

"People may be unable to donate $50 or $100 to charity, but everyone can certainly spend an extra hour a week -- that's less than ten minutes a day -- doing something for the good of his or her neighbor," he said.

If a fraternal organization or church can help, more power to them.

It should not be the Gov’t doing this work.

I know the current Gov’t doesn’t have a clue about this.

Just another Koolaid drinker.

The Knights of Columbus have been doing charitable works since long before obama was born and they'll be doing them long after he goes on to his reward.

The story isn't the Knights of Columbus. The story is how the media positions them as "echoing obama," which is so ridiculous it's laughable.

Audacity indeed. The media are the boldest liars there are.

...’With all due respect to the Government, I will say this; “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union,”.

...We will not stand down! And we will not give up arms! Nor, will we give up our rights: to our liberty, property, and charity that we will give freely to those of us that are in need...

...I will not go back to bed believing the “Government” is capable of solving anything but utter destruction of a perfect union...

...”If this be treason, have at it”. Quote. (you know who)...

Not to worry Obama's brownshirts er, civilian volunteer corps will solve the problem.
