An Iowa woman has been arrested because she failed to return a library book.
Thirty-nine-year-old Shelly Koontz was arrested Thursday night on a fifth-degree theft charge. She is accused of keeping "The Freedom Writers Diary," which she checked out from the public library in nearby Jesup in April.
Police say the book which is about a high school teacher's effort to inspire students to write is valued at $13.95.

Do they arrest everyone who doesn’t return a book or was the problem that she was a Republican?

What! Barney Fife must be working there. Meanwhile back at the border. This is the sort of thing that could lead to revolution. Capitalist Revolution.

Thank goodness Michigan isn’t so vigilant, I would have been arrested weeks ago!

What’s the penalty for jaywalking? Flogging?

Libraries usually send bills for late books, before having people arrested...this is ludicrous. I can’t imagine having forgetful people arrested, who may have just made an error.

Michael Savage has used this very circumstance to illustrate how the law applies to the anointed like Bernie Madoff versus the little guy. Steal $50 billion...ankle bracelet, an overdue library book... the perp walk.

When I graduated from college our speaker was, sadly, Sam Donaldson. His family had been sheep herders in the area for decades.
At the graduation he returned a book that someone in his family had checked out some 50 years earlier.

Having worked at libraries this is so over the top. We would bill the patron for a book that late. If the book was returned the fines would be up to the price of the book. They library could have sent it on the bill collector. Hard to believe they sent a cop to talk to the woman about this.
Harder to believe they actually jailed the woman.
