The United States looks forward to vigorous and "direct diplomacy" with Iran, President Obama's U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice said Monday.

Rice, who was confirmed last week for the post, said Iran's refusal to meet international obligations will increase pressure on Tehran to drop its nuclear ambitions and cooperate with the United States and global community.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Rice merely restated the administration position that no forms of communication should be off the table with the Islamic regime.

"This administration is going to use all elements of our national power to address concerns" about Iran's nuclear program.

Gibbs did not offer any specific initiatives, but said no one should be surprised by Rice's remarks.

Yea - because they only just started to refuse to meet international obligations? What a dumb-ass remark.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice restated Obama’s commitment to direct Iranian talks without preconditions. Supposedly Ahmadinejad values WTO membership, U.S. investment, and U.S. relations enough to abandon traditional aims.

However, U.S. lacks valuable economic or political enticements. Iran considers new economic ties trivial, when China and Japan demonstrate voracious appetites for any additional petroleum, chemicals or petrol-chemicals produced. Iranian political ties with China and Russia provide all military equipment and training needed with no questions asked.

Ahmadinejad operates international relations on Oriental principles where diplomacy becomes a fluid continuum with talks as war without bloodshed, and war diplomacy with bloodshed. Unconstrained by Western proprieties, he can use ubiquitous armed force threats, or actual violence to invest traditional diplomacy with power for meaningful change by frustrating plans, breaking alliances, isolating governments, and sowing dissension's among branches of governments.

He would not table for discussions, commitments to international terrorism, regional domination, nuclear weapons acquisition, and Israel annihilation. His best strategy remains endless dissembling, while U.S. debates national interests into ever-narrower parameters. He will acquire concessions, while gifting photo ops and sound bites coordinated to U.S. news and election cycles.

Effective diplomacy, garnering allied trust, must be covert, methodical, circumspect, painstakingly wrought, and multi-faceted. Action through espionage or military operations must reside on the diplomatic continuum, but cause ruinous forfeitures directed against Iranian tyrannical elites. Multi-national support requires the increased political and economic isolation Ahmadinejad seeks, and abandonment of Western concepts defining espionage, and war as tragic accidents of failed diplomacy. .

After reading three accounts of this, it is clear that the diplomatic effort is more important to this administration than is obtaining the desired end, the prevention of an Iranian nuclear bomb.
