House GOP Blocks Bill to Delay Digital TV Transition

By FAWN JOHNSON

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans on Wednesday derailed an effort to delay until June the date when television stations must broadcast in all-digital format.

House Democratic leaders brought the bill to the floor under a procedure intended for noncontroversial bills, requiring a two-thirds majority to pass. With Republican opposition, the 258-168 vote didn't meet that threshold.

Democratic leaders could bring the bill back to the floor under normal voting rules requiring a simple majority, which would ensure passage. The Senate passed the same measure on a unanimous vote Monday evening. It would delay the digital transition until June 12.

Without the bill, all TV stations by law must stop broadcasting their programs in analog format Feb. 17.

Good. Enough time and money has been wasted on this fiasco as it is.

How will the Obama Cult get their daily marching orders without their bread and circus clown on tv?

Does anyone know why the government has edicted to elimination of analog TV boadcsting and institued digital only broadcasts? Seems like they would not do this unless there was something sinister in their motives.

So this is where the GOP has decided to make their stand. How very meaningful. How brave.

I guess fighting Zero's cabinet selections and the Porkulus Bill was just not important enough.

The problem with the digital TV conversion is that the few people left who use rabbit ears are the least likely to have a clue about what’s happening. The solution IMHO would be to shut down the analog transmission for a week or so, thereby sending a message that something’s happening, then resume the analog transmission for a limited time until it’s shut off altogether.

So the GOP decided to use a filibuster making sure a bunch of voters wake up with no television in the near future? And the Demo’rats can blame the Republicans? Am I reading that right? Why?

That is exactly what this is about.

The Rats and MSM don't want to lose a lot of their proletariat indoctrination system because the rabble can't or won't "change" over.

Nothing sinister, it is reallocation of bandwidth. The DTV bandwith allows for better TV signals with more data for those, while the existing bandwidth that analog is running on is actually more ideal for communication, specifically a unified emergency communication network. It also opens up that bandwidth for other telecom carriers to offer more advanced services.

The delay will pass. Another $250,000,000 of taxpayer $$ will be used to subsidize $40 coupons to purchase $25 boxes.

AT&T, Verizon et al, who paid billions for the rights to the analog frequencies that were supposed to be theirs this Feb will sue, costing hundreds of millions more.

The Dems will blame the Republicans, the media will report it that way, and the people will believe it.

Repeat ad nauseum. Welcome to hell.

I don't know, the two commercials each commercial break for the past two years should have given them a clue.

I have the feeling we will be subjected to Obama monologues on a regular basis...All stations will have to "obey" and carry it. Sounds a little Hitlerish to me. We are no longer individuals. We are "the masses".

Also believe we can all be spied on via the digital....whether the TV is turned on or off or even unplugged.

P.S. IMHO

Actually the House GOP is trying to stimulate the economy by forcing the purchase of 6 million TVs.

The Democrats want the “delay” so they can cram ANOTHER $625M of pork into the “stimulus” by funding MORE coupons for digital converter boxes.

Sheesh we’ve known about this for YEARS. Now TV is a constitutional right?

It’s power, pork and politics plan and simple. The Republicans should be applauded for this stand and encouraged to stand against the other outrages as well.

If there’s anyone left who actually watches TV and doesn’t know about the DTV transition...they can only blame themselves.

Enough time, effort and money by the government and broadcasters has been spent. MORE than enough.
