Libraries say new safety law could mean no more books for kids.
The Kansas City Star ^ | January 30, 2009 | SARA SHEPHERD

Toys with dangerous levels of lead, toxic chemicals in clothing, hazardous baby cribs — the soon-to-be-enforced Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act aims to protect children from all of them.

But library books?

Unless the Consumer Product Safety Commission exempts them from the sweeping legislation, libraries nationwide could be forced to pull children’s books from their shelves or, alternately, ban children.

That would put roughly 2 million public library books — plus children’s books in school libraries — in the Kansas City area out of commission unless each volume was tested for lead, an unrealistic possibility.

*****SNIP*****

The federal law, which takes effect Feb. 10, requires that all children’s products be certified free of harmful levels of lead — whether they ever were suspected of containing lead or not.

The 63-page act does not specifically mention books.

However, according to an advisory opinion from the commission’s general counsel, ordinary books designed for ages 12 and younger are children’s products and the law does apply to them.

I think we need to start a rating program for all legislators. Their immediate product is the “bill.” We should start grading the quality of their bills, just like term papers in college for instance. We could even take away their power to give themselves pay raises, and base their pay on their grade.
At the very worst, we would probably see a significant decrease in the number of bills submitted.
That’s got to be a good thing. :)

Kids won’t really need to read books anyway, Obama will have a nice “green collar” job waiting for them that won’t require any rational thought or decision making. /sarc

Aren’t they already on the net looking at dirty pictures or playing video games anyway? Libraries are going the way of newspapers. Why shlep to a library when you can find what you want on read the net?

I’d add to that, that if they fell below a certain grade, they couldn’t serve and would have to leave.

In a library you can hide your book inside a porn mag, and still appear cool while reading.

Children are not termites or worms, they do not eat books.

A baby that might lick a book is more likely to get some other germ, virus, fungus, etc. from a book, which is much more serious than lead.

Could we please ban all the liberal nannies in government.

Absolutely! The new stimulus package can include another earmark to have all references to lead removed from books...
(see ya later periodic tables... Pb)

or testing for pencil marks/comments (that alone will stimulate the replacement of most text books)

Seriously, ya’ll my son is 16 and has read at least 100 to 150 books a year since the 6th grade. He worked at the school library for a couple of years. No symptoms of lead poisoning, just classroom boredom. I know lead poisoning affects smaller children, but my son reads A LOT.

The unfortunate fact is most people have no clue what their senators and congressmen do on a day to day basis and how many junk laws and bills they pass.

I don’t quite understand...why only two books if it is an inspection issue? Also, there have been so many recalls of dangerous product...mostly made in China. You have have some sort of safety standard.

Your son sounds a LOT like me. I used to get a kick out of looking at my library card that I signed when I was 5 (the library is now closed).

My understanding is that the legislation will require you to trade the kid in for a parentless inner city gang kid who doesn't like reading.

No more books in libraries?

let’s continue the dumbing down of Americans. Maybe when enough of them are dumb enough, we can elect a POTUS who isnt even an American, put an affirmative action First lady in the WH, pass legislation that allows Congress to raid the Treasury, play noise on MTV that passes itself off as music, make stupid movies in Hollywood that sheeple will pay us a lot of money to view...

Get the Sheeple to ignore the Constitution, pacify them with cool logos, airy speeches, and useless slogans.

Hey, it’s worked so far.
