Liam Neeson's CIA thriller "Taken" bumped off "Mall Cop" at the weekend box office, raking in $24.6 million and helping fuel the first $1 billion January in Hollywood history.

"Taken" follows Neeson as a former CIA operative trying to track down a group of kidnappers who want to sell his daughter into the sex slave trade.

"We are thrilled. It's an all-audience movie," said 20th Century Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston.

"When people come out they are going to talk about it. I think it's going to play for a long time."

Thanks for the ping! MSNBC compared this movie to the (KKK) "Birth of a Nation" film and said the "Bushies" will love it.

No Liberal themes or overtones AT ALL
No F bombs or nudity-just violence.
Hero is the dad.
"Enhanced interrogation techniques" are used
Bad guys are slimy French, Albanians, and Arabs.
Idiot is the liberal mom who lets her daughter go to Europe following U2 in concert because "all the kids are doing it"

You will love this movie! (Go see it just to piss off MSNBC)

Already made 67 million over seas before this 20+ million opening in US.

After we saw it on Sat, I told my brother to go. He actually did go yesterday, and he liked it too.

It reminded me of movies I grew up with in the 50’s where the good guy killed the bad guys and won!

You don’t want to do something like that to a former CIA operative.

Thanks for PING! Great movie, I’ve been trying to get my teenage daughter to see it. She’s wise to it...”Dad, I know it’s a story about bad things happening to girls....”

I'd like to get my 18 yr old niece to see it. Even my nephew....Maybe you can bribe your daughter with dinner and take her girlfriend too...:)

Liam Neeson is an underrated actor IMO.

I agree. I especially liked his acting as the priest in the Simpsons' episode where he attempts to convert Bart. Liam was so good in that role displaying a wide range of emotions. Should have been an oscar or some award for THAT performance!

“...Neeson in a kilt in Rob Roy.”

I thought he was very sexy in that kilt.

The left hates this film! Here are some comments from different reviews:

MSNBC: ""You have to wade through unpleasant racial politics to enjoy the action" -----snip---- "The script also tosses in some “24”-lite torture sequences that will no doubt gladden the heart of any Bushies who miss the glory days of Gitmo. Add to that the film’s “save the white girl from the foreign infidels” plotline — a staple of American cinema going back to the bad old days of “Birth of a Nation” — and there’s a queasily reactionary feel to the movie that detracts from its more incitement-to-riot qualities."

Other snippets from other reviews:

"It also feels, already, a couple of weeks into the Obama administration, like a relic of a former political atmosphere"

an above average Neeson on a revengeful, uber-violent all round nasty, borderline racist run around"

"Neeson quickly becomes the typical magic fascist stopping at nothing to get back his daughter, so it's no surprise when the film culminates with a fat Middle Eastern man set to deflower Kim amid a pile of corpses and Bryan breaking in on the business."

It would be nice to think the politics embodied in "Taken" are a little behind the times, what with its abhorrence of negotiation and a pivotal torture scene..

"The villains are swarthy brutes, and the big boss is a wicked sheik, because a run-of-the-mill human trafficker wouldn't be evil enough."

"Taken is like a post-Sept. 11 throwback to the most primitive movie melodramas about innocents threatened"

I liked everything the Left hates about this film! It’s a simple message of the good guy killing the bad guys and actually winning. The Left hates that message.

Thanks for the recommendation, my wife and I don’t go out to the movies that much (we usually just wait for the DVD), but this looks excellent and we just might have to go see it.

Was it totally predictable? I’ve always enjoyed Liam Neeson’s movies.

Saw it Saturday. No surprises in it, but it’s well-made enough so that it pulls you along with it. Very satisfying, and 6’4” Liam Neeson is a lot more believable at whoop-ass than skinny Matt Damon in the Bourne movies.
