Springsteen's Homage to Pete Seeger

World Cafe, April 25, 2006 - On the new collection We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, Bruce Springsteen honors the folk music tradition that has inspired many of his own compositions over the years. All the tracks on the new album are standards closely associated with folk icon Pete Seeger.
Springsteen assembled large ensemble of acoustic musicians to flavor the proceedings with everything from accordion to tuba. Rock critic Tom Moon talks with host David Dye about why he reacted so strongly and positively towards this latest offering by The Boss.

The New York Times has now corrected [1] a "smear" about Pete Seeger being 50 years too late in denouncing Stalin. Thanks to the intrepid research of Times reporter Daniel J. Wakin, the record has now been set straight. Pete Seeger was only about 40 years too late in criticizing Stalin.

The more they speak out, the more they reveal what asses they are. The only problem is they get a LOT more favorable coverage in the MSM than those rare few pro-American entertainers.
Bruce is to 70’s 80’s rock fans what the Dixie Chicks are to country music fans.
They alienate half their customer base every time they condescend to impart some of their socio-economic-political wisdom on the world.
That said, if you saw the Boss on the Superbowl half time show it was like watching your great grandfather trying to get down in ghetto town.
He looked and sounded like he was ready to have a stroke right there in the stadium.
But fortunately, for the medical team, he was able to finish the set.
He wouldn't have needed to hear it from Pete. It's all in the public record.

Nice strawman. Nobody said anything about “letting” anyone do anything. They voice their opinions, we voice ours. You have a problem with that?
Before rock music became hyper-politicized, Nugent did “shut up and play”. Only after the entire industry allowed itself to become a megaphone for the political left did Nugent start speaking out and standing up.
There is no comparison.
Springstein was amazing tonight! Only because he performed musically and didn’t give us his political opinion...And, that is all I will ever pay for.

IMO, the word 'amazing' has lost nearly all of its meaning in recent years. People use it to describe just about everything these days.
Well out of the last 3 Super bowl games I have to say that Springstien out did the Stones, Tom Petty and for God’s sake that mess that Janet Jackson created a few years back. At 59, Springstien did good...Because he performed and did not preach his politics for once.
Springsteen was denouncing Reagan on stage shortly after election night in 1980. It’s nothing his fans don’t already know about him.
Why Springsteen and his tribal grunting have ever been popular, I’ll never figure out! Give me the Beatles, U2, or Paul McCartney ANY day!
As to Seeger .. he’s just a misguided folk singer. No harm in that. It’s not like anyone takes his politics seriously.
Agreeance. "Amazing" is the new, favorite buzzword of like, sorority girls. When I hear someone use it in a sentence, I automatically discount their opinion!
As to Springsteen .. he was just as crappy as ever. If he'd actually try opening his mouth when he sings, he might not sound like some Indian .. oops .. Native American, doing some kind of tribal grunting. And the beginning where he laid on the ground holding the mike stand in the air between his legs .. was he doing some kind of free ad for Vagra?!

Really? I thought he was pathetic. He wasn’t in good enough physical shape to sing his songs without becoming so winded that he had to skip phrases.
Additionally, he was using every trick in the book to hide the fact that he’s losing his voice and can’t hit the high hard ones any more.
True. I love a lot of music and I assume most of these artists I like have big problems. Some died very young others were hopeless idealists...but I don’t listen to them for their politics. Musicians don’t have to be rational folks...that’s the other side of the brain.
