President Obama seeks Russia deal to slash nuclear weapons
Times Online ^ | Feb 4, 2009 | Tim Reid

Posted on 02/03/2009 7:29:03 PM PST by CalifScreaming

President Obama will convene the most ambitious arms reduction talks with Russia for a generation, aiming to slash each country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons by 80 per cent.

The radical treaty would cut the number of nuclear warheads to 1,000 each, The Times has learnt. Key to the initiative is a review of the Bush Administration’s plan for a US missile defence shield in Eastern Europe, a project fiercely opposed by Moscow.

Mr Obama is to establish a non-proliferation office at the White House to oversee the talks, expected to be headed by Gary Samore, a non-proliferation negotiator in the Clinton Administration. The talks will be driven by Hillary Clinton’s State Department.

No final decision on the defence shield has been taken by Mr Obama. Yet merely delaying the placement of US missiles in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic — which if deployed would cost the US $4 billion annually — removes what has been a major impediment to Russian co-operation on arms reduction.

Its almost as if he wasn’t paying attention when President Reagan talked with the Russians.

Reagan of course took the exact opposite approach, insisting on maintaining the development of the missile shield regardless of what the Soviet strongman offered.

Now, he wants to give it up even in advance of any talks as a precondition.

We will be screwed as Obama pulls out all the stops in his campaign for his own Nobel peace prize.

..aiming to slash each country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons by 80 per cent.

What an idiot. Whose @ss did he pull that number out of? His or Rahm's? Russia is just going to laugh at him (or say, "sure, you first" and laugh at him later). Ask for something modest (and realisic), then toot your horn when you negotiate beyond that. As it stands, this ridiculous 80% number just gives his enemies a club to use against him.

Why destroy , why doesn’t he just gift the nukes to Iran ? They have been working hard at it and I am sure A’jad would appreciate a friendly gesture.

This will not work.

After smallpox was eliminated from the world as a contagious disease, the Russians initiated a huge program weaponizing smallpox. They even developed a warhead (1993) capable of keeping the virus refrigerated so it wouldn’t be destroyed by heat when the warhead reentered the atmosphere. Please note: we were at that time in 1993 sending billions to Russia, helping them rebuild their shattered economy - and they were making improvements to WMD weaponry!

They will double-cross us on any move to reduce nuclear weapons. The Russians, the Chinese, the Persians (Iran) cannot be trusted.

This fool is going to destroy this country. I hope all of the changebots who voted for him can explain to their kids and g-kids why the US lost its world leadership.....

That is unless we are radioactive ashes floating in the stratosphere or at best, fighting alongside Mad Max.

Ahhh...........why?

Doesn’t seem like us or the former Soviets are trying to blow up the world lately.

Perhaps he should focus on the parts of the world interesting in building more nukes (Iran, N. Korea, etc..)

Obama Pledges Cuts in Missile Defense, Space, and Nuclear Weapons Programs

February 29, 2008 :: News
MissileThreat.com

A video has surfaced of Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama talking on his plans for strategic issues such as nuclear weapons and missile defense.

The full text from the video, as released, reads as follows:

Thanks so much for the Caucus4Priorities, for the great work you've been doing. As president, I will end misguided defense policies and stand with Caucus4Priorities in fighting special interests in Washington.

First, I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. I'm the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it.[i.e. not win it]

Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.

I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.

I will not weaponize space.

I will slow our development of future combat systems.

And I will institute an independent "Defense Priorities Board" to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.

Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.

You know where I stand. I've fought for open, ethical and accountable government my entire public life. I don't switch positions or make promises that can't be kept. I don't posture on defense policy and I don't take money from federal lobbyists for powerful defense contractors. As president, my sole priority for defense spending will be protecting the American people. Thanks so much.

New Pentagon Report: China's Growing Military Space Power
By Leonard David
Special Correspondent, SPACE.com
March 6, 2008

GOLDEN, Colorado — A just-released Pentagon report spotlights a growing U.S. military concern that China is developing a multi- dimensional program to limit or prevent the use of space-based assets by its potential adversaries during times of crisis or conflict.

Furthermore, last year's successful test by China of a direct-ascent, anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon to destroy its own defunct weather satellite, the report adds, underscores that country's expansion from the land, air, and sea dimensions of the traditional battlefield into the space and cyber-space domains.

Although China's commercial space program has utility for non- military research, that capability demonstrates space launch and control know-how that have direct military application. Even the Chang'e 1 — the Chinese lunar probe now circling the Moon — is flagged in the report as showcasing China's ability "to conduct complicated space maneuvers — a capability which has broad implications for military counterspace operations."

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games
Reuters: Aug 17, 2007

CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.

"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.

Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.

The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.

Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

Obama and the case of the missing 'thesis'
July 24, 2008
By Jim Popkin, NBC News Senior Investigative Producer

excerpt:

The hunt for Obama’s senior “thesis” began with a throwaway line in a newspaper article last October. The New York Times story, on Obama’s early New York years, mentioned in passing that the presidential contender had majored in political science at Columbia and had spent his time “writing his thesis on Soviet nuclear disarmament.”

Journalists began hounding Columbia University for copies of the musty document. Conservative bloggers began wondering if the young Obama had written a no-nukes screed that he might come to regret. And David Bossie, the former congressional investigator and “right-wing hit man,” as one newspaper described him, took out classified newspaper ads in Columbia University’s newspaper and the Chicago Tribune in March searching for the term paper.

Bossie came up dry, but said the effort was well worth it:

“A thesis entitled Soviet Nuclear Disarmament, written at the height of The Cold War in 1983, might shed some light upon what Barack Obama thought about our most pressing foreign policy issue for 40-plus years (U.S.-Soviet Relations),” he wrote in an e-mail to NBC News.

Here is the passage from the New York Times that the above article refers to:

"He barely mentions Columbia, training ground for the elite, where he transferred in his junior year, majoring in political science and international relations and writing his thesis on Soviet nuclear disarmament. He dismisses in one sentence his first community organizing job — work he went on to do in Chicago — though a former supervisor remembers him as 'a star performer.'"

God established this great country of ours, HE has watched over and guided our leaders for years. HE had a hand and placed Obama in this office. I do not know the way of The Lord, he does work in mysterious ways. I also believe to go against Gods will may not be prudent.

Screeching troll alert.

God had nothing to do with this idiot being in Office.

This fool is going to destroy is destroying this country. Just that his voters haven't seen it yet. Or they don't care.

They don't care as long as they get their freebies and the gravy train keeps on rolling. I just want to cry at times or just go to the nearest wall and punch a hole in it, that's how sick I am over this dang Zero in the White House. If I could push a button to restart 2008 and the election over again with different people, I'd do it. With very few exceptions like one special friend I don't discuss politics with, anybody that voted for him can go to Hell. I am very angry at all the sheeple out there. Even my mother weeped and cried on inauguration day. I'm glad I was working, otherwise I would have started.

If there is ever an atomic war and when the survivors pick up the pieces, I certainly hope Zero's name will be on the most hated list with Pol Pot, Adolph Hitler, Benedict Arnold and Vikdun Quisling and it will be taught to all the kids, along with "McGuffy's Reader." I hope when children are bad in those future time, when Zero's name is mentioned, it will strike a terror in kids so bad, they will be good.

I am so angry over this. Tell you the truth, Clinton did his damage, I got angry at him, but never the livid, white-hot anger like I have now. I thank God I can vent steam here to reduce the pressure, that is until Zero shuts us down. B-P Dang, sometimes I feel like the C. Thomas Howell character in "Red Dawn." One thing, we were born born in 1966. B-)

I've just had it up to here with all the Zero worshippers out there and Zero's stupid policies, my "I give a damn meter" is busted.

Remind me again of the stellar Russian record in complying with arms control treaties.

Didn't they cheat on every single one we ever signed with them?

Oh that's right. They did.

Obama and Co are just pulling all the stops out now, huh! Whether he really believes his hype or not the fact that he is pushing this only two weeks after taking office shows how completely unprepared this rookie is for the office. This is a complicated issue that requires, first, a quiet review of all aspects of doing such a deal with a regime that just recently invaded a neighboring country, has cracked down on many individual rights and has used oil and gas shutdowns to blackmail countries dependent on energy deals previously made.

I truly believe that many more Americans than we may believe are quickly turning on Obama and the Dems. As far as I can see Joe Biden's prediction that a major test of Obama will be forced by a foreign power in six months is way ahead of schedule. My small form of optimism is that the sheer speed to enact bills/policies with long-term repercussions that would fundamentally change the US status internally and externally will in the long term show how dedicated Obama and Co. purposely tried to achieve outright socialism while having denied so to our faces.
