(Dem) Senator Jim Webb says Pork bill has 100 billion fat in it

Posted on 02/05/2009 6:20:52 PM PST by HD1200

We keep hearing that the pork in the bill is 1% of the total. Tonight while channel flipping MSNBC, Maddow, had a reporterette on that said even Senator Jim Webb is upset with this "stimulus" bill quoting him as saying there is at least 100 billion of costs that do not belong in this bill. No vote tonight. Harry Reid was "mistaken" about having the votes. Dems are losing moderate Democratic Senators on this bill.

From a Newt Gingrich email.

I'm sure by now you've heard of the almost one trillion dollar stimulus package moving through the U.S. Senate.

But it's not really a stimulus bill.  It's a big government, big corruption, and big pork bill.

Among many other wasteful, non-stimulative projects, it includes $650 million for digital TV coupons, $1 billion for climate satellite and habitat restoration programs, and $600 million to replace a portion of the federal government vehicle fleet.

In the video below, I lay out in stark terms exactly why this bill, as currently written, is not worthy of our support. Please take a moment to watch.

The Gallup Poll found that 54% of Americans either want to see major changes to the current plan, or they outright reject it.  Other surveys are also indicating that public support is plummeting.   Politicians can call it stimulus and they can call it change, but it's just more of the same - and the American people are starting to realize it.

That's why the time to act is now. With so much at stake, our elected officials need to hear from us.

Here is what you can do - pick up your phone and call your Senators right now at 202-224-3121. Let them know exactly what you think about how they intend to spend your hard-earned money.

The Senate is voting at the end of this week, so please make the call today.

“Jim Webb knows where the American public (= his constituents from a conservative state) stand on it.”

I’ll best my last dollar that his phones are ringing off the hook...”NO, NO, NO, NO, NO,”

This bill going down in flames will be good for the (somewhat) conservative blue-dogs. There power will increase proportionally to the loss of Pelosi-power.

You have to understand DC inside baseball. Pork = some other politicians "earmark," and not your own. An earmark is something that is sponsored by a particular congressman, for his district and is specifically directed targeted spending within a bill, and not under the nominal discretion of the agency through whom the pork passes. What you all are complaining about is waste, which in DC is affectionately known as "programs." Program expenditures, after appropriation, are nominally under the control and oversight of the agency through whom the waste passes [though some "telephonic" direction may come from powerful committee chairmen].

Useful expenditures are also called programs so it is all very confusing to the unwashed.

“Yes, it is the only thing we got left.”

Agree...unfortunately. We’ll be blamed for everything if we do manage to stop it (exclusively).

I emailed both Webb and Warner the day this bill passed the House. They responded saying that we need a stimulus but they recognized there are things in this bill that have to go.

Neither wants to be a one-term Senator.

I would say more like 900 billion fat. Get rid of it.

I seriously doubt they got the flaps up. That must have left a nice carbon footprint. No gas for you.

They remain in a panic. It’s a lot different when you have to answer for what you are so they will try and keep up the charade because Virginia isn’t that blue yet, but there is no doubt their true natures would like to tow the party line. This is proof the Demonrats don’t want to own this and their policies are nice in rhetoric yet a complete disaster they don’t want to take the fall for. Lost, empty, wicked souls every last one of ‘em.
