In tears, the Westland woman accused of accepting money for sex from the husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., began serving five days in jail today for violating the terms of her probation.
The decision, said 52-4 District Judge William Bolle, effectively ends the case.
It's been a long ride for the 21-year-old Alycia Martin, who is now eight months pregnant and engaged, said her pro bono attorney Frank Cusumano Jr. Martin, who dropped out of high school in the ninth grade and has been on her own since she was in her late teens, is working at a fast food restaurant, has a driver's license and is working to get her GED. She also voted for the first time in November. But her gas and electric has been shut off and she struggles to buy necessities like food, clothing and baby supplies.
She is, Cusumano said, the most broke she's ever been - but also the happiest, because she's a contributing member of society and no longer involved in prostitution.
"My car breaks down every other day," said Martin, shortly before she was led away by an Oakland County Sheriff's Office deputy. "There's nothing I can do. I can't walk here. And I don't have money for gas most of the time."
Martin had been sentenced in August to six months of probation on a misdemeanor trespassing charge after she was arrested in a prostitution sting in February 2008 at a Troy hotel. Initially charged with misdemeanor prostitution, she was sentenced by Bolle under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which allows first-time nonviolent offenders ages 17-21 to have their records wiped clean if they successfully complete probation.
Bolle revoked that privilege this morning.
According to court officials, Martin had not showed up for mandatory drug and alcohol testing since September. Cusumano has repeatedly said Martin, who makes less than $100 a week and shares a car with other family members, cannot afford to pay for the testing.
Tom Athans, Stabenow's husband since 2003, was not charged in exchange for his assistance in the case. He never testified because Martin pleaded guilty.
"Alycia will get through this," Cusumano said. "She'll serve her time. I don't know why he'd throw her in jail, but it underscores the whole thing. There is a disparity between wealth and poverty.

I've heard plenty of rumors which I won't repeat about the Dangerously Incompetent one, but I've never heard that rumor before.
Alycia is in jail and I visited her this morning. She was sitting all curled up and crying in the jail clinic holding cell with 4 other women. Last night, she went into false labor, and the jail personnel had to take her to the hospital. She was dehydrated and needed a saline IV. Alycia is nauseated and vomiting. The jail deputy said they would notify the Judge, but I told Alycia not to expect much compassion from the Judge. Nobody in Troy, from the top to the bottom, has ever cared about doing the right thing, so I doubt that anything will suddenly change. There is a strong message being sent to the prostituted persons of the lower class by this sentence. Accept your position and status, you will get no breaks in Troy. In fact, the letter of the law will be enforced against you. This is not the case elsewhere in the region. Judge Faunce in Warren and Judge Mack in Wayne, released Alycia from her fines (not prostitution related) because she was impoverished and did not demand “a pound of flesh.”
Last night, the “john” probably kicked back a few Manhattans in and passed out somewhere. “Duane Johnson” or whatever he calls himself today probably moved a few young women around and collected his $3,000 to $4,000 dollars. The Detectives, the Court Staff and all the City Attorneys and staff were out at cocktail parties, political fund raisers, or at at home with their families.
Alycia, well Alycia spent her night on a plastic bench in the Oakland County Jail throwing up because of accident of birth and being poor. Does this make any sense to even moderately critical minds? Alycia was not given an opportunity to cooperate against Athans.
You know Alycia when she was a small child used to sing at County competitions and fairs. Her sister says she was unbelievably talented singer. She also wrote poetry and had a book of poems. That book was taken from her by the pimp and she never saw it again. This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

I’m not disagreeing that the girl has had a crappy life; I’m just amused when lurkers pop in for the first time on subjects like this. They’ve had no opinions and nothing to share with our community up until this point?
Are you her Pastor? Her attorney? Her ‘fiance?’ Are you related to her? What authority do you have to visit her in jail?
